2. PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD
After the Marcos’ administration by the First People
Power Administration, the press was once again freed,
and an influx of periodicals which was a result of the
repression. At this time, most of the stories showed
about Marcos, and the damage he left in our country. If
not for Journalism, the Philippines would not have
known until years later that he made Billions of Debts,
which in turn Corazon Aquino was to manage. At this
time, Journalism made one of it’s most crucial roles.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, Manila
Standard, and Business World were born at this period.
3. Significant Changes and advances have taken place.
Media became a central venue for sensitive issues like
death penalty, charter change, and other issues before
the EDSA revolution that have been not, or minimally
covered. Investigative reports have led to further
investigations , have changed transparency, and have
reduced transparency in judiciary, legislative, and
executive branches in the government.

5. Developments at these times are attributed to the
following organizations of the state:
•Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism –
Creates rigorous researches on affairs of the state.
•Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility – Aims
upgrade the state of journalism by giving workshops
and seminars to the public
•Philippine Press Institute – Conducts trainings and
sponsors the Annual Community Press Awards that
recognizes provincial newspapers and periodicals; and,
•Asian Institute of journalism and communication –
which conducts graduate studies in Journalism and
media research, interim training, and policy advocacy.
6. THE START OF A NEW REPUBLIC
Media has been a great influence upon people, using
forms of broadcast media, radio, and television, and of
course, periodicals to deliver the truth about Marcos.
Towards the end to the People Power Revolution,
Corazon “Cory” C. Aquino became the catalyst for
change, along with the help of allies, whom voices
cannot be heard without Media. Radio Veritas and
DZRH played important roles, even when Veritas was
destroyed and their transmitters are turned down, they
still found other solutions against Marcos. At the start
of the 5th republic, Media paved the way for social and
economic development.
7. TRANSITIONS THAT MEDIA UNDERGO
Starting from the development of blogs and social
networks, the internet has been the next portal for
news, latest from local to foreign. Media has went to
broadcast in televisions, are now better and has been
revolutionized to meet the needs of people. Other
periodicals have supplied necessary information to the
majority of the population in the Philippines. Social
networking has paved the way for even minors and
normal citizens to give their insights and vies on news,
and of course, help understand and spread unbiassed
news.
8. SOCIAL OPINION MATTERS NOW
Citizen Journalists, normal people who start blogs or
write posts on social issues, started springing nowadays.
These days, everyone’s opinions can be voiced out by
simply opinionating. Citizen Journalists are important
these days to spread news and to raise public awareness
of social needs and problems, to help create solutions
to moral dillemas, and other local, and government
problems.
9. PROBLEMS JOURNALISTS ARE FACING
Despite all the advances in Journalism and the freedom
we have as journalists, there are still problems we face:
• Discrimination and Abuse – Philippines has been
named as one of the worst places to promote and
exercise the art of journalism, for killings have been
done, by the actions of government officials and
movements of guerrillas. Because of this,
governmental and political opinion has been tighter
these days. Over 123 journalists have been killed since
1986.
• Freedom – Sometimes, a journalist is prohibited and
at cases, are sued for covering news and other current
events by recording and noting of an event.
