1.
2. Are you ready to achieve more in education and life?
Today’s world is digital and mobile, app-based and personal. To thrive in it,
greater confidence around how best to harness technology and new digital
skills are vital. But not everyone has them. Or they may need to boost the
skills they have to help them develop in their specific role.

organisations in the UK. This guide and easy-to-use tool can help you assess
your digital literacy and capabilities and to easily find the necessary courses
and resources to propel you forward.
This document is designed to guide you in developing your expertise with
plenty of free online resources to raise your digital readiness to new heights
and help you become future leaders in business and academia. The benefit?
Turbocharged creative, collaborative, and competitive abilities, so you can
achieve more in education and life.

Welcome to the digital future!
INTRODUCTION
3. Choose the learning path tailored for you
Research shows that role-based learning approaches are much more
effective than a one-size-fits-all strategy.
That’s why the University of Leicester has been excited to support
Microsoft – as a trusted advisor - in thinking deeply about individual
staff and student needs. After all, ‘valuing people’ has been at the centre
of our own journey to grow a community of digitally confident
professionals here at the University.
For us it continues to be about recognizing how everyone has different
needs and potential. That’s what’s been central to our plans to build
together our ‘Digital Campus’. We are delighted to see this interactive
guide starting with a consideration of what role you have in your
university or college.
Professor Ross Parry, University of Leicester
Why role-based learning matters

4. Build on what you know, using free
online resources
To help you develop your digital capabilities
progressively, you need to learn about the skills
required to accelerate your development.
We’ve worked in conjunction with Jisc and Microsoft to
categorise these skills into three levels – bronze, silver
and gold – depending on whether they will help drive
productivity, creativity, or innovation, respectively.
For each level, we’ve also developed three core
learning paths so you can take charge of our own
development and navigate the necessary online
courses and learning resources you need to succeed.
Penny Langford, Head of eLearning, MK College

Building digital capability: From
surviving to thriving in a digital world
For over 30 years, Jisc has been a trusted partner and
expert adviser on digital technology for universities
and colleges throughout the UK. During this time,
technological change has continued to transform our
workplaces – with the expectation that in the next 20
years 90 percent of all jobs will require digital skills.
The Jisc Digital Capabilities framework (right) is widely
recognised in universities and colleges and provides a
benchmark for the digital capabilities that are required
for a range of academic, administrative, and
professional roles. With this as a backdrop, we hope
you enjoy stepping through this guide and easily
finding the courses and resources which can help you
move from bronze to silver to gold appropriate for
your role.

8. Gain new digital skills to accelerate your learning
As a student, chances are you grew up when the World Wide Web was just
taking off. You may use a laptop, smartphone, and maybe even a tablet
interchangeably for personal study, social media, shopping, entertainment, and
video calls with friends.
You know the basics of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, perhaps some Excel.
For you, technology should be easy to use and just work. Forget dense
technology explanations, much less manuals — but it is always great to have
someone to call. Improving your digital skills can help you to learn faster, work
better on group projects, and ensure you can achieve the highest marks
possible in your coursework.

22. Build new digital skills to aid investigations and collaboration
As a researcher, data is core to your work. Gathering, collating, normalising, analysing,
storing, securing, sharing, and presenting it are all tasks that describe a typical week for
you. You’ve been using technology for a long time and have become expert at using it,
preferring to solve tech issues on your own instead of contacting IT’s help desk.
It’s good to be in control of your technology use rather than needing to work inside IT’s
restrictions or having IT install software you need. Working with colleagues is important,
too, so you’re likely comfortable with apps like Skype and Teams that facilitate
collaboration.
New digital skills can help you achieve more in your investigations and cultivate wider
and deeper relationships with colleagues both where you work and in your professional
circles around the world.
Use the icons below to discover the courses and tools you need to enhance your skills.

37. Acquire new digital skills to enhance learning experiences
As an academic, getting students excited about your lecture topics is your mission —
and key to their learning. That can be a challenge when students have limited
attention spans. Odds are, you also must grade exams and papers, hold office hours,
conduct research, write papers, and do some administration, so time is precious.
While you know technology can be helpful, its effectiveness in new teaching and
investigative approaches can be uncertain, not to mention that setting up new
technologies demands your scarce time. If it works, great; if not, you want over-
the-shoulder help quickly. Developing your digital skills can give you new ways
to engage your students, so they learn more effectively. Plus, technology can
give you tools to achieve more in the many other areas of your academic work.

53. Add new digital skills to boost productivity and performance
As an administrator, you work hard to ensure your department’s performance —
organisational and operational — is always the best it can be. Email, calls, reports, and
recordkeeping, often using Microsoft Office applications, keep you extremely busy. When
questions arise, people look to you for answers. It’s a juggling act, with time forever in
short supply.
That’s why productivity matters so much. And why poor communications between
departments and multiple systems to access or manage can seem frustrating. Your
desktop PC technology helps you do your work, but you sense that you could develop
your digital skills further. By doing so, you could increase your personal productivity and
performance, helping your department do the same.
