Explain…
 When we study our own
society, we also examine
ourselves and the community
where we belong.

 Human Body
Nature of Social Science:
 1. A unique combination of various disciplines.
2. A study of human relationships.
3. A study of man’s development through the ages.
4. A realistic course of study.
5. It forms an important part of the core curriculum.
6. It includes a commitment to action.
7. Aims at preparing the learner for wholesome
social living.
Scope of Social Studies:
 The scope of Social Studies is very vast and
wide as the world itself and as lengthy as the
history of man. According to Michaelis “the
breadth of social studies program should
provide for a variety of experiences so that the
child’s learning will be well rounded and well
balanced”.
Scope of Social Studies:
 The main points are as follows:
1. Vast and wide as the world. It is as wide as the
world and s long as the world. It is the study of
human relationships in areas such as:
a. People of one’s own nationality and people across
the world.
b. People and various kinds of institutions.
c. People and Earth.
d. People and Time.
e. People and resources.
Scope of Social Studies:
 2. A functional study of Natural and Physical sciences
and Fine Arts.
Social Science - Natural Science – Physical Science
are interrelated
Development, change, etc. in one field affect the
others
3. A study of current affairs.
4. A study leading to International Understanding.
5. Practical study of various resources.
How is society different
from nature?
Nature
 Nature conjures an image of random and unstructured
forces that shape a given area.
 These forces and events usually follow patter, law, or
process, ever since the world existed.
 These patterns and laws follow an amazing uniformity,
which enables a researcher to trace back what happened in
the past by looking at what is happening in the present.
Natural Sciences have developed
sophisticated ways on how to investigate
nature – how to learn more about it,
discover its secrets, and identify
underlying universal laws.
Society
 Society is a contrast to the preceding
imagery of nature. It is organized, deliberately
structured and formalized, and bound by
rules drafted and implemented by the people
who themselves constitute society.
Fundamental Concepts of
Social Science Theories
Fundamental Concepts What does Social Science emphasize?
Social Structure
Patterns of behavior and interaction, which have
been institutionalized over time; result
of human interaction with one another and
with the “social world” and “natural world”
Action Decisions, activities, and interactions made
by human beings in the context of their
particular social world and conditioned by
their collective consciousness
Fundamental Concepts of
Social Science Theories
Fundamental
Concepts
What does Social Science emphasize?
Individual Social actors, and active, mindful, and conscious decision
makers
Nature Environment; social structures that provide the physical and
biological as well as the social context of collective action or
social phenomena
Culture Shared and collective actions, ideas, and values that are
demonstrated, exhibited, produced, and reproduced by a
particular group of people and communicated through
symbols including language
Social science disciplines pose different
questions but they actually observe a
common social phenomenon – everyday life
events and activities that involve people and
affect people living together in a particular
society.
2 Elements of Social Science
SOCIETY (social)
EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS (science)
Aim of Social Science – to characterize
the nature of being human
