History

During the Napoleonic Wars, it became part of the Duchy of
Warsaw in 1807 and later, of Congress Poland ruled by
the namiestniks of the Russian Empire. Located at the borders
with the German Empire and Austria-Hungary, Sosnowiec became
famous for the Three Emperors' Corner tripoint, which was located
within current limits of the city.

During the January Uprising, in
February 1863, the Battle of
Sosnowiec was fought, in which
Polish insurgents led
by Apolinary Kurowski defeated
the Russians. The victory allowed
the Poles to take control of the
surrounding towns as well.

With effect from 10 June
1902, by the order of
Emperor Nicholas II of
Russia, Sosnowiec was
legally named a city with
the area of 19 square
kilometres and with 60,000
inhabitants. Obtaining the
city rights helped the
economic and cultural
development of the town.

After the 1939 Invasion of
Poland, which started World
War II, the city
was occupied by Nazi
Germany and
renamed Sosnowitz. In June
1943 thousands of Jews were
deported from Sosnowiec
Ghetto to the Auschwitz
concentration camp. After
World War II, Sosnowiec
further developed. On June 1,
1975, the metropolitan area
was expanded when the
neighbouring locations of
Zagórze, Kazimierz Górniczy,
Porąbka, Klimontów, and
Maczki, became its districts.

Museum in Sosnowiec

Founded in 1983, from the beginning it was
identified with the figure of the great Pole,
tenor, resident of Sosnowiec - Jan Kiepura.
The club persistently popularizes these
aspects, with particular emphasis on
classical music.
The Museum started its activity in 1985 as
a branch of the Upper Silesian Museum in
Bytom. Ten years later the institution was
taken over by the local government of
Sosnowiec and since then it has been
known as the Museum in Sosnowiec.
During 25 years of its activity about 500
exhibitions have been organized, which
were visited by over 700 000 visitors.

theater in Poland. It was built by Charles
Steczkowski architectural plans, originally
planned as a complex: Winter Theatre, Hotel

Culture
Department of Computer Science
and Materials Science
It consists of the Institute of Computer Science,
the Institute of Materials Science and the Chair of
Materials Science. The Institute of Computer
Science and the Department of Materials Science
are located in Sosnowiec. The Institute of
Computer Science was founded as the Institute of
Scientific and Technical Information in 1974 and
currently offers three-year bachelor's and two-
year master's degree programs in Computer
Science.
Medical University of Silesia -
Faculty of Pharmacy
Established in 1971, it is one of the five
faculties of the Silesian Medical Academy.
The studies are conducted in the single
master studies system (pharmacy, medical
analysis, biotechnology), and - in the double
master studies system (biotechnology,
cosmetology, computer science).

There are over 10 large parks in Sosnowiec. Some of them are: Mieroszewski Park in Zagórze, Park
in 1 Maja Street, Millennium Park in Milowice, Park in Baczyńskiego Street, Park in Mościckiego
Street, Park in Ostrogórska Street, Forest Park in Kazimierz, Borderland Park with Exotarium, Wanda
Malczewska Park in Klimontów, Schön Park in Środulka, Żeromski Park in Pogoń. The most popular
place of recreation for Sosnowiec is Sielecki Park. The oldest information about the park surrounding
Zamek Sielecki and basing its western border on the Czarna Przemsza River comes from 1835. In
addition, there are 72 old trees - nature monuments in Sosnowiec.

Jan Kiepura
Since 1912, he attended the seven-Male School
of Economics in Sosnowiec, renamed after
independence at the National Gymnasium.
Stanislaw Staszic. In 1919 he joined the army
voluntarily (I Bytomskich Rifle Regiment). He
participated in the first Silesian uprising.
During the Polish-Soviet War (1920) for a few
months spent in a military unit in Torun and
non-commissioned officers school in
Grudziadz. In November 1920, he returned to
school, where in June 1921 he graduated.
Since October 1921, studied law at Warsaw
University. Simultaneously, he studied singing
at the Waclaw Brzezinski. In February 1924 he
was admitted to the Warsaw Opera as an
apprentice. Removed from the theater after a
few months, he settled in Sosnowiec, where he
practiced singing under the direction of
Ignatius Warmuth. he was again in the United
States. In 1958 he visited the country - has
performed in major Polish cities.
