Show of hands – how many of you are on Facebook? How many of you are on Twitter? How many of you have received or sent text messages? Who has a blog? Who reads blogs?Overview:Organizing StrategyWhat Mobile Messaging isWho uses Mobile messagingBest practicesAn example of how we’ve used mobile messaging at the NAACP.
With so many people using Facebook, there’s a great opportunity to use the social network for organizing and for reaching an even broader audience of people.
Connect with a broad audienceMeet potential supporters without them seeking you outPublish important content, news, campaign information and action items where your audiences are already spending a lot of their timeWe use Facebook to stay connected to our supporters, for polling on different issues and events, etc. In this post, we asked ppl if they were voting absentee or had voting early, and that sparked a discussionMany of you may not want to start your own facebook pages, and in that case you can send me what you’d like to post and I can do what’s called a gated post on our national fan page. A gated post is a post that only those in your area will see. More people will see it since we have over 160,000 fans, and it ends up being less work for you in the end.
This picture got about 2,000 likes and was shared by nearly 700 people. Pictures have become increasingly popular for shareable content on Facebook. On the other side we have a link we posted about section 5 of the voting rights act. Facebook also allows you to share relevant links.
EventsPosting news and related links about your branch/issuesPromoting petitions and campaigns
You don’t want to inundate your facebook friends, but posting something new every 3-4 hours is reasonable.
The best content is usually pictures and infographics – people are less likely to watch and share videos. For black history month we are sharing lots of pictures of famous africanamericans and we find they are the most shareable content there is
There are lots of services that allow you to automate your facebook updates, much like you can for twitter. Facebook feed should not look like your twitter feed. Much better when your facebook posts are created manually instead of automatically.
On ourFacebook Fan Page, we try to post articles that are relevent to our seven issue areas-make your content regular to who you are as an organizations and what you do
If any of you are interested in using text messaging, and would like to send a message to our list, you can do so by filling out the mobile message request form. The message must be approved by your regional field manager. Once I get the form and the message is approved, we can move forward with sending it out. Also, I will be doing webinars like this one every Tuesday about different digital media topics. If there is something you’d like for me to cover, please feel free to contact me. If you have any questions related to digital media and need guidance on using certain tools, don’t be afraid to pick up the phone or shoot me an email! If you’re really fancy, you can also tweet to me at @loryn24.
