2. Success Mantraa no.1
Success Matraa no.1 is P.I.E.!
This success mantraa is from the book,
Empowering Yourself, The Organizational Game
Revealed, written by Harvey J. Coleman.
His formula is P.I.E.
• P= Performance =10%
• I= Image =30%
• E= Exposure = 60%
3. Performance gives only 10% success.
• Performance= The actual work we all do in
hospital every day. At home and in school we
are told to work hard to get success. So we
perform hard. I have known many doctors
who sincerely work hard in their hospitals,
but their work goes unnoticed. Coleman says
performance has only 10% role in success.
Then how to get remaining 90% score for
success?
4. Image gives 30% success
• Image = The impression , other staff in the
hospital have of us. This is our personal brand.
We have to know what all staff from the CEO
of the hospital to the liftman think of us. Our
image in the hospital plays 30% role in our
success! The better the image the better the
success.
5. Exposure gives 60% success
Exposure = How many important people of the
hospital know about our hard work ? Does our
immediate boss (HOD) and his boss ( Medical
Superintendent) know our devotion to duty?
Does our colleagues in other dept know how
diligent we are? 60% success depends on our
exposure to others in the hospital. This is the
reason why some doctors are successful
others not, in spite of hard work.
6. Success Mantraa no.2
• 2nd success mantraa is : A.P.F.
• A= Always
• P= Patient
• F= First
7. Always Patient First.
• Always Patient First.
• Hospital work is a team work. We will be having several
meetings, for various purposes like, for proper
coordination, resolving certain issues, announcing changes
in workflow, boosting morale of doctors or just the CEO
wants to remind us all that he is the boss!
• The meeting may last for 1hour or more. We should not
switch off the mobile. We may be wanted urgently in the
ward. Once we get a call from ward, we should leave the
meeting IMMEDIATELY! And attend the patient.
• No meeting is more important than patient.
• Always patient comes first.
8. Success Mantraa no.3
• 3rd success mantraa is a bitter pill to swallow.
• We may be the very root of the problem! The
reason for not becoming a successful doctor
may be inside us.
• The solution lies in discovering this and
mending ourselves.
9. Respect ancillary staff
• 4th success mantraa is to respect ancillary
staff.
• Many of the nurses and other staff have been
there for many years. We should be aware of
the experience of people around us and have
respect for them.
10. Polite physicians are more popular
• 5th success mantraa is Politeness.
• I regret to write here that many doctors never
smile. No empathy towards their patients.
While the patient is talking to them, they stare
at mobile phones or computer screens. How
many doctors in India ask permission before
entering patients’ room and also say ‘good
day’ or ‘thank you’ while leaving the room?
11. How to be a polite physician?
• 1. Greet people , patients, their attendants,
doctors, nurses, other hospital staff heartily.
• 2. Create a congenial environment in the hospital.
• 3. Build up a purposeful personal relationships
with colleagues including liftman!
• 4. Visit clinics of popular doctors and learn why
they are popular. Politeness attracts more
patients.
12. • Thanks for reading.
