Making a difference, one light at a time
All SOLARKIOSK subsidiaries are proactively
taking steps to encourage cooperation with
local communities in order to promote solar
energy and inform communities about its
many benefits.
SOLARKIOSK operators, who are mostly
local women, are the main voice of the solar
energy transformation of their communities.
We congratulate them wholeheartedly for
their amazing work and accomplishments.
They are the ambassadors of change at the
BoP.
Karibu sana!
2015 has been an amazing year for
SOLARKIOSK. A year of growth was
accompanied by an increased number of
SOLARKIOSK communities and an
increased social, economic, and environm-
ental impact at the Base-of-the-Pyramid
(BoP).
By the end of 2015, the number of
implemented SOLARKIOSK E-HUBBs has
grown to over 100 and the upcoming year
will see that number increase even more as
we expand our reach even further.
An Ode to our Friends
In late 2015, the efforts invested by
SOLARKIOSK and our amazing partners
have resulted in the realization of some
impressive projects. Sharing the same
values and vision for the BoP allows us and
our partners to pool our mutual expertise
and become true pioneers of sustainable
modern development at the BoP.
The picture above is a great example: An
EKOCENTER kiosk in Rwanda is providing
reliable clean energy for the first-ever 3G
telecom tower in that rural part of Rwanda.

SOLARKIOSK subsidiary teams are the
engine behind the EKOCENTER projects in
Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and
Ghana. They are responsible for managing
the operational aspects of EKOCENTER,
such as planning and carrying out the
impact initiatives on the local level. Such
initiatives include solar energy awareness
campaigns and youth sports tournaments
(pictured right, in Ethiopia), as well as
active support for on-the-ground technical
collaborations, such as the 3G telecom
tower in Rwanda (pictured right).
The EKOCENTER project, a collaboration
between SOLARKIOSK and The Coca Cola
Company, has grown by another 60 locations
in 2015…and there are many more soon to
come. EKOCENTER will extend its reach
beyond Sub-Saharan Africa in 2016 and will
kick off additional international partnerships
in order to maximize its impact, which
focuses on improving well-being through
reliable access to drinkable water and
supporting the empowerment of women in
BoP areas worldwide.

SOLARKIOSK and the Siemens Stiftung have
partnered to create the non-profit organization
SolarFountain gGmbH.
The organization will focus on establishing a
reliable supply of clean energy, purified water,
and quality products & energy services through
implementations of solar-powered kiosks in
areas which lack a reliable and clean water
supply year-round. Local entrepreneurs will
operate all kiosks and their business activities
will contribute to the social, economic, and
environmental development of their
communities.
SOLARKIOSK and TOTAL are cooperating
on a pilot project that kicked off with the
implementation of two SOLARKIOSK E-
HUBBs in rural Kenya in the autumn of
2015.
The goal of the project is to maximize the
availability of solar lighting products in
busy, rural markets and and raise local
awareness about the benefits of solar
energy for domestic and productive use.
The initial two E-HUBBs are located about
100km east of Nairobi.
SOLARKIOSK and SES Techcom Services have
entered a partnership to deliver high-quality
Internet connectivity to BoP communities
worldwide.
SOLARKIOSK will be able to use satellite
connectivity to provide Internet access to
underserved areas, initially in Africa. This will
be done via SOLARKISOK’s E-HUBB structures,
which will provide electricity to all systems,
including the satellite dish, in order to enable a
wide range of connectivity services to the
local community, targeting individual users,
businesses, schools, medical centers and
farms.

SOLARKIOSK Tanzania team members
have recently visited the Vikawe Primary
School, which is one of the EKOCENTER
locations implemented this year in a rural
area just north of Dar es Salaam.
With the help of local educators, several
SOLARKIOSK Tanzania team members
were able to organize a session with the
pupils to distribute notebooks and pens.
They raised local awareness about the
health and safety benefits of solar energy
products by distributing the locally-made
‘Solar King’ comic book to the children.
The SOLARKIOSK Kenya team collaborated
with the local Young Environmental Network
(YEN) organization on an environmental
awareness event with student participants
from 200 primary and secondary schools
within Machakos county, east of Nairobi.
The event included a tree-planting activity
and a student march (pictured above) as
encouragement for locals to embrace clean
energy alternatives and reduce their
dependence on charcoal, which is adversely
affecting the local environment and the
health of individuals.
The SOLARKIOSK Ghana team helped organize
two very successful community impact events in
the EKOCENTER locations of Berekuso and
Kokrobite, near the Ghanian capital Accra. The
events focused on several crucial impact issues:
health, solar energy, and energy-efficient cook
stoves.
The SOLARKIOSK Ghana team partnered with
local doctors and the EKOCENTERS were used as
a platform to provide free malaria examinations
and eye examinations within the community.
Educational materials on personal health, fertility
and STDs were presented and shared with the
event visitors.
