Here are pictures from a short hike to explore the area Georgia O'Keefe called the White Place in contrast to the Black Place which she painted earlier. This is private land owned by Dar Al Islam off New Mexico Highway 155 not far from the town of Abiquiu. The mosque allow visitors to hike in and asks that you not climb the rocks or disturb the area.

We understood why
the Spanish thought
that some of the rock
formations they saw
were ruins of ancient
cities.

8. The rocks on the valley
floor included polished
granite and black
obsidian. This fascinated
me. Dennis wisely
restrained me from filling
my pack with beautiful
rocks.
The rocks always look
best on the damp valley
floor and less impressive
on my window sill.

9. In this picture the sky
is blue but as we
hiked up the slot
canyon the sky
turned gray and I
remembered stories
about flash floods.

11. It was hard to tear
ourselves away
from these
fascinating rocks but
we reached the end
of the canyon and
the sky was
darkening. We
needed to move on
to Taos.
