  4. Objectives To widen access to higher education for millions of people To access complete courses offered by universities all over the world To open up high quality higher education to wider audience

Characteristics Does not have curriculum, it can be self-directed Does not limit the number of participants Consists of traditional class materials made accessible online, which may include; i. Filmed or recorded video lectures ii. Readings iii. Problem sets iv. Online quizzes and examinations v. Interactive learning modules vi. Interaction with other students via forums
  6. Types of MOOCs • xMOOCs : learner shares the ideas and there is only one instructor on the discussion • cMOOCs : learners control there own learning. They are not tested or assessed.

Drawbacks of MOOCs • Flexibility can make the course more difficult • Instructors are less accessible • Digital literacy is required for effective use • Students are less likely to form relationship with instructors • Students with visual or auditory disabilities may not be accommodated • Courses require strong internet • Easy for students to drop out
