Mohandas Gandhi was born in 1869 in India and was married at age 13 or 14. He studied law in London and then moved to South Africa in 1893, where he spent 20 years fighting for equal rights for Indians. When Gandhi returned to India in 1914, he became a leader in the Indian independence movement and advocated for non-violent protest. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by gunshots in India by a man who was angry at him for being late to a prayer meeting. Gandhi is considered a hero for his role in helping India gain independence and influencing civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr.
