The women island
sla Mujeres, or women island, is 8km long and its
widest point is 800m. His name was given in 1517
by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, who led a
Spanish expedition in search of labor to work the gold
mines of Cuba.

The numerous statues representing women who were in
the Mayan temples of the island have inspired this name
in Córdoba. The majority of these temples were probably
built in honor to Ix-Chel, the goddess of the Moon and
Fertility. It seems that the Mayans have never lived in
Isla Mujeres. The island was probably used as place of
pilgrimage.
Today the island is popular for its beautiful beaches, coral
reefs, temples and landscape. Furthermore, we find very
restaurants, hotels offering a good price/quality ratio and
numerous craft shops.

The city of Isla Mujeres
The city of Isla Mujeres, with its 10 000
inhabitants, lies north of the island and
has about a dozen streets that intersect.

island is located in this small town, where
it is good to walk outside of peak hours.

you at Casa de la Cultura (Av. Guerrero),

In the south of the island
In the south of the island, you can visit the Tortugranja farm, a turtle farm. Given
the rapid decline in the population of turtles in the Caribbean, the environmental
organization Eco Caribe has taken the responsibility to conduct the breeding,
study and preservation of endangered species.
Do not miss the ruins of the temple of the goddess Ix-Chel. Located at the
southern tip of the island, on a cliff near the lighthouse, the ruins have
unfortunately been almost entirely swept away by the terrible Hurricane Gilbert in
1988. However, today there are still guessing the walls and architecture. Besides
being a place of pilgrimage, the temple was also used formerly of astronomical
observation post.
Finally, very popular with divers, El Garrafon National Park is a place run by
beginners snorkel for diving because of its calm waters. In the park you will also
find an aquarium, a small museum, a seafood restaurant, cloakroom, lockers and
showers.
