2. The Great Exchange
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to
bring good news to the poor;
He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the
captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
And the day of vengeance of our God to comfort all who mourn;
To grant to those who mourn in Zion-
To give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
The oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The garment of praise instead of faint spirit;
That they maybe called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord,
that He may be glorified
ISAIAH 61:1-3
3. ISRAEL’S CONDITION DURING ISAIAH’S
TIME
Israel is divided into two kingdoms: NORTHERN KINGDOM AND
SOUTHERN KINGDOM
As a result of Assyrian influence in Israel’s politics, Israelites were forced to
give half of their income to as tribute payment to the Assyrians
The Israelites became insensitive to the poor and needy because of the
Assyrian’s influence on religion: PAGANISM
These two kingdoms was at war with each other while being at war with
other nations
YHWH is going to bring the Assyrians against the North. He will bring the
Babylonians against the Assyrians. He will send the South into exile in
Babylon. He will bring the Persian Cyrus against the Babylonian

It is time to give up your ashes, your sackcloth every burden that is weighing you down.
