Mission
Tates Creek Christian Church exists
to win people to Christ (evangelism),
build up believers in faith, knowledge, and
service (encouragement), to help those in
need (benevolence), and to stand up for
Christian values in the community (witness).
3. One of the comments that people make to me from time to
time is that I have my Dad’s smile! That comment blesses me.
That comment brings warm, loving thoughts of Dad to my heart.
In thinking about that comment though, I have a question,“Do
I have Dad’s smile because it is in my DNA, or do I have Dad’s
smile because I saw his smile so much? Do I have Dad’s smile because it is
in the genes, or do I have his smile because I spent so much time with him?”
The answer is both. The last time I was with Dad before he passed away, right
before I left him to come back to Lexington, he cupped my face in his hand
and gave me a big smile! He passed away the next day! Great forever memory
etched on my heart!
Our theme for April is“Multiplying Christ in me!” We will be exploring the last
three chapters of Ephesians for this theme. Ephesians 4:20 says, “But you did
not learn Christ in this way.” One of our primary goals as a Christian is to reflect
the person of Jesus Christ. Reflecting the person of Jesus and pointing people
to Jesus was the goal of John the Baptist. When someone said something to
John the Baptist about the multitudes following Jesus, John replied, “He must
increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). Is pointing people to Jesus one of
our goals? Is reflecting the person of Jesus one of our priority goals?
How do we reflect the person of Jesus better? One way is through the power
of the Holy Spirit, who lives in us. The power of the Holy Spirit living in us
would be the DNA of Jesus! Do we demonstrate the fruit of the Holy Spirit
(Galatians 5:22-23)? The second way is to spend more time with Jesus in His
Word. The more time we spend with Jesus in His Word the more we will reflect
the Spirit of Jesus.
When I was growing up on the dairy farm, I spent a lot of
time with Dad. We milked cows together. We cleaned out the
barn together. We worked in the hay together. We worked
in the tobacco crop together. We repaired fence and built
new fence together. We did so much together. So, while part
of his smile is in the DNA, the genes; part of his smile that I
reflect comes from spending so much time with him. When
we spend a lot of time with Jesus, we will reflect the Spirit of Jesus! May our
goal through the last three chapters of Ephesians be to multiply Christ in
ourselves so that others will see Him and be drawn to Him! And what a day
that will be when we see the smile of Jesus!

Reflecting the Person of Jesus
4. One of the solos that I have enjoyed singing for many years is
the song, Christ Lives Through Me from the musical, A Good Life,
by John W. Peterson & Don Wyrtzen.
The song is based on Galatians 2:20a: “I have been crucified
with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. “
Here are the lyrics:
O glorious, wondrous, matchless truth that in the Word I see—
The risen Savior, glorified, lives out His life in me!
I yield to Him and reckon self as crucified and dead,
So that the life of Christ my Lord may be outlived instead.
Christ lives through me! Christ lives through me!
By the Holy Spirit’s indwelling power, Christ lives through me!
This is the path of power divine for service here below —
The only real, effective way to count for God I know.
‘Tis by the Holy Spirit’s power that He abides with me;
And as I to His Lordship yield He gives me victory!
Christ lives through me! Christ lives through me!
By the Holy Spirit’s indwelling power, Christ lives through me!
This song is a powerful testimony of what can happen in our lives as we
yield to the will of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. We all have so much
that has been given to us, but for so many, it seems difficult to make a
commitment to use those gifts willingly. When we do, we become the
hands and feet of Christ. We should live to serve Christ and encourage those
who need Him.
We multiply the ministry of Christ and
His Church each time we serve others
and hopefully that service will prod them
to do the same in someone else’s life.
Multiplying our ministry is not always
easy, but if we stick with those we are
discipling, it can be exciting to see what
can happen from our investment in
them.

5. Husbands: Love your wives like Christ loved the church
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave
himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed
her by the washing of water with the word,” (Ephesians 5:25–26)
As we continue to move through Ephesians as a church I
want to challenge my fellow husbands to multiply Christ in your marriage
by loving your wives as Christ loved the church. How did he do that?
Jesus died for the church (v. 25)
The first thing he did is he“gave himself up”for the church. He died for
her. What does that mean for us as husbands? It means leading our wives
by dying to ourselves daily for the good of our wives. It means waking up
every morning or coming home from work every evening and committing
to care about her more than you care about yourself. It means doing
things that neither one of you wants to do simply so that she would not
have to do them. This is a hard calling, and it’s a wonderful picture of
Christ and the gospel to the rest of the world - and especially to our wives.
He made her holy and cleansed her (v. 26)
Second, Jesus made the church holy - he sanctified her - and he cleansed
her of her sins. What does this mean for us as husbands? It means if we’re
going obey this calling we have to take a personal interest in the holiness
and salvation of our wives.
What does this look like practically? First, it means we must be
cultivating a strong relationship with God in regular times
of Bible reading and prayer on our own. How can we give
to our wives what we don’t even have ourselves? Second,
it means we shoulder the burden of leading spiritually in
the home. Don’t make your wife get the kids together at
night for a Bible story and prayer. You take the initiative to
do that. Don’t make her be the one motivating the family to get to church
on Sundays and to be involved throughout the week. You take that
responsibility on yourself. And lead in repentance. Model to her and to
your household that godly leadership means being the first to admit your
sins and ask for forgiveness.
Husbands, multiply Christ in your marriage by leading it like
Christ led the church.

Understanding Our Calling
Take a moment and think about the disciples that walked with
Jesus? I am sure you have done this lots of times before from
several different perspectives, but this time I am asking you
to think about them from the perspective of living a new life
with Jesus. Matthew, Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip,
Bartholomew, Thomas, James, Simon, and Judas. Each of these men came
from different backgrounds, but Jesus saw something in them. He called them
to follow and be fishers of men. Jesus, God’s Son, called them. He told them
to leave everything behind and that they would suffer and be persecuted. He
told them. He taught them how to love, how to serve, and how to lay down
their lives for the cause of the Gospel. As they were changing into these
powerhouse messengers for the greatest message ever to be told, stop and
wonder what they might have been changing from. I don’t know for sure
where all of these men came from in regards to their personalities, but I have
an idea.
When I was in college I worked in a factory for a short time and also on a
house framing crew for several summer and winter breaks. Both of these work
areas were tough places for me spiritually. The conversations were often very
offensive and degrading to anyone. There were moments that I was fierce with
my faith and worked hard to be a witness, but there were times when I also
stumbled and fell on my face in my walk. The wisest choice for me was to leave
these areas. Simply flee.
In the midst of these times I received my call to ministry. It was a literal phone
call. I rejected it at first, but a year later accepted. The call was to serve as a
youth minister for a very small rural church. I am pretty sure I was called by the
church because of the example of faith my parents had set in the community.
I would be in charge of all programming from birth through college age. My
first week in the ministry the seriousness of my calling became a reality. The
children and students that followed my example and leadership needed me to
be something that I wasn’t in my every day life. I needed to change. I needed
to… accept my call. To do this I had to know more about Jesus and allow Him
to multiply inside of me. He needed to have more space in my heart and push
out the stuff that shouldn’t be there. I had to learn to walk like I was worthy of
my calling.
Now, take a look at Ephesians 4:1-6. It is here that Paul reminds us of our
call. Our call to be united. To be humble, gentle, patient, and bearing with one
another. As we search together I encourage you to allow Christ to multiply in
you! To change you from the inside before he mulitiplies your impact outside!
~ Matt
matt@tatescreek.org
7. When we think of spiritual multiplication, what would be
the first thing that comes to your mind? Multiplying the
number of those that believe the Gospel, right? Creating
followers of Jesus. Creating those followers who will in turn
create more followers of Jesus, and so forth. But how are
we doing this? When we read the Bible, attend church, worship the Lord,
set aside our daily prayer time, etc. we are making sure that our faith is
continually being refreshed, but are we helping ourselves to reach out to
others?
Ephesians 4:11-12 says that “Christ gave gifts to people, some to be
apostles, some to be prophets, some to go and tell the Good News, and some
to have the work of caring for and teaching God’s people. Christ gave those
gifts to prepare God’s holy people for the work of serving, to make the body
of Christ stronger”.
We are each given spiritual gifts to help
advance the work of the Lord. My gifts are
put to wonderful use in Critterland, as I have
the inclination towards caring and nurturing.
When we really look at the gifts that we
have been given, and if we utilize them
in the correct way, what can stop us from
multiplying those we speak with into their
own discipleship? I think if we all really assess
what we have been given and use it to further
the whole church, we can become great not
only in our numbers, but in our personal faith
as well.

8. We are gearing up for our spring and summer activities for
our senior adults and that includes the day trips beginning
again. Our first day trip is April 27th and we will be
journeying to New Albany and the Derby Dinner Theater for
their presentation of the comedy“Sister Act.” Our departure
time is 9:00 am and the cost for this trip is $35.00 which covers both a
great meal and the program. The following month our trip date is May
25th and it will take us to Cincinnati to the Center For Holocaust Humanity
and its program entitled“Ann Frank: A History for Today.” Our departure
time will be announced for this as the date gets closer. June brings us
to the annual outing to Johnson Christian University and its program
for senior adults. This week long event known as Senior Saints in the
Smokies is always a rich time of fellowship and encouragement. Our day
trip for June will be on June 22nd and we will
be journeying to Bardstown for the Stephen
Foster Musical. These are events for which
we need to register early as tickets will sell
out. Please let me know right away if you
want to be included in one or all of these
activities, but trips are not the only things
happening for our senior adults. We also have
our monthly lunch meeting known as BWAC
or Better With Age Club. This meets each 3rd
Thursday at 10:30 am and we hope to involve
more in this fellowship. If you are retired why not consider joining us for
this monthly event. I would also remind you of our Wednesday morning
Bible study which meets each week at the church at 10:30 am. We have
a great crowd which gathers each week for this study and we would like
to encourage anyone else desiring spiritual feeding and fellowship to join
us. I hope you will consider becoming involved in our programs for senior
adults if you haven’t been previously. If you have, encourage someone
else, and let’s enjoy an even sweeter fellowship this year than last!

“Making Sense of the Old Testament”
Led by John Davis
Does the Old Testament make you uncomfortable? Does the thought
of reading through Isaiah or Numbers seem daunting? Or even boring?
Which laws no longer apply to us and which ones still do? What do
animal sacrifices have to do with me? We’ll answer these and other
questions during this Spring’s 7-week Oasis class, Making Sense of the
Old Testament.
“What Happenes When Women Pray”
by Evelyn Christenson
Women’s Study Led by Nadine Lear
We will be walking through many avenues of communing with God
through effective prayer, scriptures, and our experiences. We will learn
all of the ways we are to talk to God, and how we know that He is hearing
us and answering us. We will also have great fellowship as we grow
together in faith in our Wonderful Lord and Savior. Prayer is the power to
change the world. Let’s encourage and strengthen each other through
this experience in prayer study.
“Hands and Feet Ministry” Matthew 25:35-40
Led by Vickie Cole
What does it mean to be the hands and feet of Jesus? Each week,
participants will invest themselves in a choice of community outreach
ministries demonstrating their love for God by pouring themselves into
the lives of others. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of
these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40

Making Disciples
I recently bought a new van! We needed a second vehicle
and started looking some time ago. I spent hours and invested
lots of time examining and researching everything I could
about several different models. I researched them so much
that I started seeing ads and might add that I am still seeing
ads for vans when I browse the internet or get on Facebook. Amy and I took
lots of time and weighed the cost of making this purchase. We went to the
dealership, test drove the van, came back and were ready to buy! As I pulled
out my checkbook to pay for the van, a flood of thoughts came to my mind
and I wondered for a moment if I was making the right decision. In the
end though, we weighed the cost and knew that we were making the right
decision.
Following Jesus by making disciples isn’t difficult to understand, but it can
be very costly. Jesus’teachings are often difficult to process and sometimes
even handle. Many times, it seems that by sharing His teachings, we are
often rejected along with His message. Just check out John 15:18–20!
“It’s easy enough to understand, but it can be extremely costly. The cost is totally
worth it when you look at the potential it has to radically change lives.”
Our theme for the year is Multiply. We have
walked through what this looks liked in regards
to the whole health of our church, how grace
affects our response and our relationship with
God, and now this idea of multiplying Christ
through me.
Sadly, it seems that disciple making has become the exclusive job of
pastors (and missionaries). Think of it this way; salespeople sell, doctors
practice medicine, lawyers defend and uphold the laws of the land, teachers
teach and ministers minister. It seems, though far too often, that’s the way
it works in most of our churches. While it’s true that the pastors, elders, and
apostles in the New Testament made disciples, we can’t overlook the fact
that discipleship was everyone’s responsibility. The early church took their
responsibility to make disciples very seriously. To them, the church wasn’t
a company run by a CEO. Rather, they compared the church to a body that
functions properly only when every member is doing its part.
11. Paul has a lot to say regarding this and explained the function of the church
in Ephesians 4:11–16:
“He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ …
we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head,
into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined
and held together by every joint with which it is
equipped, when each part is working properly,
makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in
love.”
Paul saw the church as a community of
redeemed people in which each person is
actively involved in doing the work of ministry.
The pastor is not the minister—at least not in the
way we typically think of a minister. The pastor is
the equipper, (the Chief Disciple maker) and every member of the church is a
Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The implications are huge. Don’t think
of this as merely a theological issue. Picture yourself in this passage. Paul said
that your job is to do the work of ministry! Jesus commanded you to make
disciples!
Each day of our life we must weigh the cost of decisions and choices as we
live out our life. When I think of this power of the statement“Multiplying
Christ in Me”I am excited and encouraged that part of God’s plan for his
church is using you and me to help multiply HIS KINGDOM! God made you
the way you are; He has provided and will continue to provide you with
everything you need to accomplish the task. Jesus commands each of us to
look at the people around us and start making them into disciples. Obviously,
only God can change people’s hearts, but we are called to be obedient in
making the effort to teach them, even though we still have plenty to learn
ourselves. We must weigh the cost and be willing to put a little skin in the
game. As we dig into this new series, I would encourage you to examine
where you are in all of this and weigh the cost!

There’s nothing quite like the
satisfaction of a glass of cold spring
water on a hot afternoon, a cold shower
after mowing the lawn, a dive into a
stream after a long hike, or sometimes
a glass of lemonade fresh out of the
refrigerator. Being satisfied means
you’ve been filled, you want nothing
more, and that the thirsty longing has
been quenched.
That’s exactly how Jesus satisfies. To
have Him means that you have it all.
To trust Him means that your needs
are met. To know Him is to realize
that He is your dearest, most faithful
companion. The next time you pour a
cold drink on a hot afternoon, pause
and praise the Lord for the way He
quenches your thirst. Wellspring of
water overcomes, subdues, fulfills, and
satisfies like nothing else, like no one
else.

A Helping Hands Ministry. . . provided through the Men’s Ministry Team
The Barnabas Ministry started as a response to a growing need to help
those in our congregation who have physical needs they cannot do for
themselves. This is especially true of widows/widowers and
elderly members of Tates Creek Christian Church. These
needs include things like simple home maintenance and
repairs, yard work, snow removal, moving furniture, etc. It
also may include transportation needs such as getting to
the store, a doctor’s appointment, or just odd jobs that need to be done.
If you have a need, simply contact Chris Lee at 859-684-7240 or by email
at chris@heritagemortgageconsultants.com. We will post the need to our
roster of men and see who can help, then contact to make arrangements to
complete the task. This Ministry helps fill a need to so many of our members,
and provides a rewarding method for our Men to serve. As our needs grow,
we are always looking for more fellas to join our helping hands list. If
want to be included on the roster please contact Chris Lee and give him
your phone and email. ~ Chris Lee
Here is a note from the Rieffer family who needed help a couple months ago.
“My parents, Ric & Hope Rieffer, attend your church. Several of your church’s
members showed up this past Saturday to help my parents move. I work in the
morning on the weekends and couldn’t get there till 12:30 to help. I was blown
away when I arrived to discover all these people who’d nearly already completed
the move. And it wasn’t like these were close friends of the family. I’m not even
sure my parents knew everyone, or maybe anyone.
It was so heartwarming to see so many people joyfully giving their time and
service to people they don’t even know - especially to move, which is maybe
the least desirable favor anyone can ask of someone. Without their help, it
would’ve taken my brother, my wife, and I all day Saturday, Sunday, and likely the
following weekend to complete the move. We’d already checked into pricing for
the move and it was just going to be too expensive.
My parents were involved in ministry for many years before becoming teachers
and retiring. It seems to me that every time they’re in need and ask God for help,
He delivers. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve witnessed it. Also, for as long as I
can remember, my dad has never said no to anyone in need. And obviously, you
have several people like him within your congregation. I’m extremely
thankful for them.
Again, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!“ ~ Daniel Rieffer

Exciting Ministry News from the Fehls
Dear Friends at TCCC,
You have been so faithful to pray alongside us…
many of you for about twenty years now as we
began our journey in Ethiopia in June 1996 with
a CMF REACH internship! THANK YOU! And as
you know, on June 19, 2016, we left Ethiopia and transitioned to life in
America.
This update brings some exciting news about our next ministry and
many answered prayers. Adrian has accepted an Executive Pastor role
with East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis! He began his role
of staff management, facilities, operations, and finances on March 9.
God has provided a great fit for him with a variety of duties--creating a
positive/effective ministry team, developing systems for the facilities to
run smoothly and efficiently, and much more. Please pray for him as he
continues to learn and as he discerns what the priorities are in the days
ahead. We are happy and thankful to have the opportunity to stay in
Indiana and to serve at E91.
Please pray as we look for a house closer to the church. Pray for the kids
as Darby and Ethan will probably need to change schools for next year.
Pray that they will make this transition well and find good friends right
away.
On a personal note, Jennifer’s mom still needs your prayers. Her
radiation treatments have ended, but the effects of the burning continue.
Please pray for relief and complete healing in the days ahead.
Please know that God has used you in mighty ways through our“long
and strong missions partnership”to help protect and provide for us. We
love you! And we hope you will feel free to touch base with us to let us
know how you are doing.

Is it possible to give and save at the same time? In some respects
this may be possible. Here is one way for those who are at least
70 1/2 years of age and taking required minimum distributions (RMDs)
from your individual retirement accounts: use your RMD to make your
regular intended gift to the church (or any other charity) for the year.
(The gift must go directly from your IRA to the charitable institution.)
This meets the requirement for the RMD each year that you take the
distribution and make the gift – that is the giving part. The amount
of the RMD that is given is 100% excluded from your gross income,
thus saving you federal, and possibly state, income taxes – that is the
saving part. In addition, by lowering your income, this can also keep
your Medicare premiums lower and make less of your Social Security
benefits taxable. As with any information regarding your investments
and your taxes, please check this out with your broker or tax advisor
before implementing to make sure it will benefit you in your individual
situation. If you have questions, contact David Eversole in the office and
he will help you find the information you need.
