  1. 1. As a literary device, genre refers to a form, class, type of literary work.
  2. 2. NONFICTION  the branch of literature comprising works of narrative prose dealing with or offering opinions or conjectures upon facts and reality  includes biography, history, and the essay (opposed to fiction and distinguished from poetry and drama).
  3. 3. Types of Nonfiction Genres Informational  explains something that is actual, real life, & contains facts Ex.) textbooks, magazines, newspapers Essay  a short literary composition that reflects the author’s point of view  Based on a particular theme or subject
  4. 4. Speech  spoken communication; ability to express one’s thoughts & emotions by speech, sounds, and gesture Narrative  is information based on fact that is presented in a format which tells a story.
  5. 5. Autobiography  life story written by one’s self Biography  Writing about someone else’s life
  6. 6. FICTION  Narrative literary works whose content is produced by the imagination and is not necessarily based on fact.  Genre Fiction and Literary Fiction
  7. 7. TYPES OF FICTION Fantasy Science Fiction  based on impact of science, either actual or imagined.  Fiction with strange or other worldly settings or characters/ fiction which invites suspension or reality.
  8. 8. Horror  frightfully shocking, terrifying, or horrible. Creates a feeling of fear in both the characters and the reader Mystery  deals with the solution of a crime or the unraveling of secrets. Anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown.
  9. 9. Historical Fiction  set in the past and based on real people and/or events Realistic Fiction  a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people or animals in a believable setting

  12. 12. Legend Tall Tale  Main characters skills/size/strength is greatly exaggerated (hyperbole)  Exaggeration is humorous  Based on a real person or place  Facts are stretched beyond nonfiction  Exaggerated in a serious way
