With more and more emphasis from the EPA and local agencies on Green Infrastructure as a stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP), it is increasingly critical to have the capability to model Low Impact Development (LID) features. Have you struggled analyzing LID features in cumbersome tools, spreadsheets or models intended for other purposes? Fortunately, LID features were recently integrated into the EPA SWMM model. This model is a free and effective modeling tool for engineers struggling to quantify the effects of LID and Green Infrastructure features, such as Bioretention, Permeable Pavement, Infiltration Trenches, and Vegetated Swales. Of great interest, are the growing media drain rock, under drain, and clogging capabilities of the program. This presentation was originally given in partnership with the Texas Floodplain Management Association and will provide viewers with LID basics and information on the LID tools that can be modeled in SWMM. Walker has a Masters in Civil Engineering, is a Certified Flood Plain Manager, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states. Walker’s experience includes developing a California statewide Low Impact Development (LID) modeling tool for Phase II communities in collaboration with California State Sacramento’s Office of Water Programs, which is funded by the State Water Resources Control Board. Walker serves as LID technical expert on the San Francisco Bay Area Regional Green Infrastructure Tool and the San Francisco Bay Area Green Plan-It Master Plan in collaboration with the San Francisco Estuary Institute. Walker is also Principal developer of a model on behalf of the Texas Water Development Board to evaluate water conservation Best Management Practices statewide.
