➢ MITRE began in 1958, sponsored by the US Air Force to bridge across the
academic research community and industry to architect the Semi-Automatic
Ground Environment, or SAGE, a key component of Cold War-era air defense.
➢ Founded as a not-for-profit company to serve as objective advisers in systems
engineering to government agencies, both military and civilian.
➢ HQ in Bedford MA and McLean VA and has 60+ locations
➢ Operates 6 of the 42 federally funded research and development centers, or
FFRDCs (The National Security Engineering Center, previously known as the C3I Federally
Funded Research and Development Center until 2011, addresses national security issues for the
Department of Defense)

➢ 9,000 employees focused on radar technology, cyber, GPS, cancer research,
and aviation collision-avoidance systems to breakthroughs in evolving
disciplines such as vehicle autonomy, artificial intelligence, and synthetic
biology.
➢ 2008 : Presented with the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public
Service for "significant contributions in communications, command and control
decision-making, intelligence, cyberspace, and warfighter field support, as
well as research and development".
➢ 2008: MITRE was awarded the Air Force Association's Theodore Von Karman
award for "the most outstanding contribution in the field of engineering and
science
