Humidity
Humidity is the presence of water vapour in gas.
Absolute humidity is the amount of water vapour per litre of gas,
expressed in mg/l.
Relative humidity is a measure of how much water vapour is in a
gas compared to its capacity to hold water vapour. It is measured as
a percentage.
Principle
•When dry gas passes over a moist surface evaporation occurs and
the gas becomes more humid.
•When moist gas cools, water droplets condense and the gas
becomes less Humid.
•The warmer a gas, the more moisture (absolute humidity) it can
carry.
•If a gas already has 100% humidity no more moisture will
evaporate into it unless it is heated further.
What is Respiratory Humidifier?
During mechanical ventilation ,When dry air/gas is administered to the
patient there occurs airway cooling, airway drying ,inflammation which can
lead to many complications. Optimum humidity is required for ventilation -
33mg/L in non invasive mode and 44 mg/L in invasive mode. Exposure to
humidity levels below 25mg H2O /l or 100% saturated gas can lead to
respiratory complications. Less humidity can cause airway mucosal
dysfunction and more humidity can cause reduced mucus viscosity and
increased pericellular depth fluid.
To avoid the above said conditions and to administer optimal humidity.
respiratory humidifiers are used during ventilation. Respiratory Humidifiers
heats the water contained in the humidification chamber, humidifying the air
passing through it.
Why Humidifiers are Used?
Prevent Airway
Cooling
Prevent Airway Drying
and Water Loss
Prevent Airway
Inflammation and
Constriction
Ensure patient is

Temperature Probe : if the temperature probe is damaged or disconnected
Heater Wire : if the heater wire is defected or disconnected
Heater : if the heater is defected or disconnected
Maximum System
Operating Pressure : 20 kPa,
Gas leakage at max.
Pressure : <100 mL/minute.
Alarms
•Humidified gas from the chamber pass through the inspiratory limb, where
its temperature must be maintained in order to prevent the generated
humidity from condensing.
•This is achieved with a heater wire encapsulated within the inspiratory
limb. The humidifier maintains the temperature along the inspiratory limb
by monitoring the temperature at the airway probe and controlling the
voltage delivered to the heater wire.
• Under normal conditions the gas is heated to 40 °C in the invasive mode,
34 °C for the non-invasive mode.
Heater Wire Operation
Respiratory Humidifier maintains the airway temperature at the desired set
point (invasive 37 °C or non-invasive 31 °C) by heating the chamber of
water through the heater plate. As the gas cools considerably down the
unheated circuit, a water trap circuit must be used to collect the resulting
condensate.
Non-Heater Wire Operation
Automatic Humidity Compensation
nice 8050 Respiratory humidifier calculates the power required to
adequately humidify the gas flow through the chamber. If the minimum
power level is not met then the chamber set point will automatically be
increased in 0.5 °C steps until the minimum power is achieved. The
maximum amount of compensation applied is either 3 to 5 °C
depending on the mode (Invasive/Non-invasive)
If humidification is improved and too much power is being applied, then
the humidifier will automatically reduce the chamber set temperature.
Display & Controls
Power Switch
The humidifier will power ON and OFF by the rocker switch is provided in
the right side of the humidifier. After power-on the humidifier starts self test
which checks for possible problems in the humidifier setup. If everything is
working correctly, normal control is initiated.
Mode Key
By press mode key select humid ifier to toggle Invasive & Non-Invasive. The
Mode indicator LED shows the user which mode is selected.
Invasive mode
Invasive mode is for use with patients whose upper airways have been
bypassed by either a tracheostomy or endotracheal tube. In this mode of
operation the humidifier attempts to deliver optimal humidity to the patient
(37 °C, 100 % RH).
Non-Invasive mode
The humidifier normally controls the chamber outlet temperature to 31°C,
and the airway temperature to 34°C, maintaining a +3°C temperature
gradient along
the inspiratory limb.
Standby Mode
If the humidifier detects a problem with its setup or operation it will alarm.
Depending on the severity of the alarm condition, the humidifier will either
remove all power from the heating systems, or enter stand-by. The humidifier
will also enter stand-by if the gas flow through the breathing circuit has
stopped.
Heater wire power is set at 15%.
Control of chamber temperature is attempted, within the following limits:
Heater plate temperature is limited to 50°C.
Mute Key
The mute key silences the humidifier's audible alarm.
Heater Wire
By press heater wire key select humidifier to toggle heater wire ON or OFF
CH/AW Temp Key
By press CH/AW Temp key to shows the Chamber Actual Temperature and
Airway Actual Temperature.
Temperature Display
The front panel display window shows the saturated gas temperature (the
lower of the airway and chamber temperatures in °C) delivered to the patient.
Display & Controls(Cont’d…..)
Indicators
Heater wire Indicator
Heater wire indicator LED glow if the heater wire in the breathing circuit has
not been connected correctly, or if the heater wire or heater wire adaptor is
faulty. An intermittent connection or excessive current (total current in all
limbs > 3.5 A) in the heater wires will also produce this alarm.
Temperature / Flow Probe Indicator
Temperature Probe indicator will glow if the temperature probe is not
correctly plugged in, or the probe used is
faulty. The humidifier tests for the following probe fault conditions:
Temperature probe disconnected
Chamber thermistor open or short circuit
Airway thermistor open or short circuit
Flow thermistor open or short circuit
One thermistor shorted to another
Chamber Probe & Airway Probe Indicator
These indicators are used to show that either the chamber probe or airway
probe is not inserted into the breathing circuit correctly.
Add Water Indicator
If there is insufficient water in the humidification chamber, Add Water LED
will glow

  • 6. Humidity Humidity is the presence of water vapour in gas. Absolute humidity is the amount of water vapour per litre of gas, expressed in mg/l. Relative humidity is a measure of how much water vapour is in a gas compared to its capacity to hold water vapour. It is measured as a percentage. Principle •When dry gas passes over a moist surface evaporation occurs and the gas becomes more humid. •When moist gas cools, water droplets condense and the gas becomes less Humid. •The warmer a gas, the more moisture (absolute humidity) it can carry. •If a gas already has 100% humidity no more moisture will evaporate into it unless it is heated further.
  • 7. What is Respiratory Humidifier? During mechanical ventilation ,When dry air/gas is administered to the patient there occurs airway cooling, airway drying ,inflammation which can lead to many complications. Optimum humidity is required for ventilation - 33mg/L in non invasive mode and 44 mg/L in invasive mode. Exposure to humidity levels below 25mg H2O /l or 100% saturated gas can lead to respiratory complications. Less humidity can cause airway mucosal dysfunction and more humidity can cause reduced mucus viscosity and increased pericellular depth fluid. To avoid the above said conditions and to administer optimal humidity. respiratory humidifiers are used during ventilation. Respiratory Humidifiers heats the water contained in the humidification chamber, humidifying the air passing through it.
  • 8. Why Humidifiers are Used? Prevent Airway Cooling Prevent Airway Drying and Water Loss Prevent Airway Inflammation and Constriction Ensure patient is stabilized Infant Humidifiers Less Humidity = More Evaporation

  • 12. How to operate? Control Panel Operation Alarms Heater Wire Operation Non-Heater Wire Operation  Automatic Humidity Compensation Display & Controls Indicators
  • 14. Temperature Probe : if the temperature probe is damaged or disconnected Heater Wire : if the heater wire is defected or disconnected Heater : if the heater is defected or disconnected Maximum System Operating Pressure : 20 kPa, Gas leakage at max. Pressure : <100 mL/minute. Alarms
  • 15. •Humidified gas from the chamber pass through the inspiratory limb, where its temperature must be maintained in order to prevent the generated humidity from condensing. •This is achieved with a heater wire encapsulated within the inspiratory limb. The humidifier maintains the temperature along the inspiratory limb by monitoring the temperature at the airway probe and controlling the voltage delivered to the heater wire. • Under normal conditions the gas is heated to 40 °C in the invasive mode, 34 °C for the non-invasive mode. Heater Wire Operation
  • 16. Respiratory Humidifier maintains the airway temperature at the desired set point (invasive 37 °C or non-invasive 31 °C) by heating the chamber of water through the heater plate. As the gas cools considerably down the unheated circuit, a water trap circuit must be used to collect the resulting condensate. Non-Heater Wire Operation
  • 17. Automatic Humidity Compensation nice 8050 Respiratory humidifier calculates the power required to adequately humidify the gas flow through the chamber. If the minimum power level is not met then the chamber set point will automatically be increased in 0.5 °C steps until the minimum power is achieved. The maximum amount of compensation applied is either 3 to 5 °C depending on the mode (Invasive/Non-invasive) If humidification is improved and too much power is being applied, then the humidifier will automatically reduce the chamber set temperature.
  • 18. Display & Controls Power Switch The humidifier will power ON and OFF by the rocker switch is provided in the right side of the humidifier. After power-on the humidifier starts self test which checks for possible problems in the humidifier setup. If everything is working correctly, normal control is initiated. Mode Key By press mode key select humid ifier to toggle Invasive & Non-Invasive. The Mode indicator LED shows the user which mode is selected. Invasive mode Invasive mode is for use with patients whose upper airways have been bypassed by either a tracheostomy or endotracheal tube. In this mode of operation the humidifier attempts to deliver optimal humidity to the patient (37 °C, 100 % RH). Non-Invasive mode The humidifier normally controls the chamber outlet temperature to 31°C, and the airway temperature to 34°C, maintaining a +3°C temperature gradient along the inspiratory limb.
  • 19. Standby Mode If the humidifier detects a problem with its setup or operation it will alarm. Depending on the severity of the alarm condition, the humidifier will either remove all power from the heating systems, or enter stand-by. The humidifier will also enter stand-by if the gas flow through the breathing circuit has stopped. Heater wire power is set at 15%. Control of chamber temperature is attempted, within the following limits: Heater plate temperature is limited to 50°C. Mute Key The mute key silences the humidifier's audible alarm. Heater Wire By press heater wire key select humidifier to toggle heater wire ON or OFF CH/AW Temp Key By press CH/AW Temp key to shows the Chamber Actual Temperature and Airway Actual Temperature. Temperature Display The front panel display window shows the saturated gas temperature (the lower of the airway and chamber temperatures in °C) delivered to the patient. Display & Controls(Cont’d…..)
  • 20. Indicators Heater wire Indicator Heater wire indicator LED glow if the heater wire in the breathing circuit has not been connected correctly, or if the heater wire or heater wire adaptor is faulty. An intermittent connection or excessive current (total current in all limbs > 3.5 A) in the heater wires will also produce this alarm. Temperature / Flow Probe Indicator Temperature Probe indicator will glow if the temperature probe is not correctly plugged in, or the probe used is faulty. The humidifier tests for the following probe fault conditions: Temperature probe disconnected Chamber thermistor open or short circuit Airway thermistor open or short circuit Flow thermistor open or short circuit One thermistor shorted to another Chamber Probe & Airway Probe Indicator These indicators are used to show that either the chamber probe or airway probe is not inserted into the breathing circuit correctly. Add Water Indicator If there is insufficient water in the humidification chamber, Add Water LED will glow
