2. 1. The relationship between the Safety Specialist (SS) & Senior
Manager (SRM) lays the foundation for a successful safety culture.
2. The SS provides ideas and suggestions to help improve the stations
culture, but it must be presented by the SRM and implemented by
each and every employee.
3. The SRM can “lean” on the safety advocate to observe and provide
feedback as to how the current safety programs are working.
4. The SRM must hold each operation accountable for their results
(including our business partners by asking for a written Safety Plan)
5. The SRM must take an active role in presenting results. (ie for
positive results – don’t just order food, cook the food & engage your
drivers and employees.
3. 1. This is the “Tip of the Spear” – they lead the safety charge at the
station
2. Point of contact for the Safety Specialist & SRM
3. The SS must develop a solid relationship thru Teaching Training &
Motivating (TTM)
4. “Atta-Boy” – remember to reward the Advocate for positive results,
it could be as simple as a sincere thank you or buying them lunch
5. The SRM & SS will hold the Advocate accountable for positive &
negative results.
4. 1. This is the “Life Blood” of the stations safety culture
2. Eyes & Ears of the station. The members must communicate safety
concerns as they happen – not once a month during the meeting.
3. Lead by example – the members must act in a safety conscience
manner at all times. One member from each position on the dock
(Load, Unload, Van Lines, Smalls, Swak..)
4. Pride – provide recognition to all members. CLEV supplies all
members with Safety Advocate shirts / sweatshirts to be worn
EVERYDAY.
5. Creative Juices – engage the members to come up with Safety Events
to allow safety learning to be FUN. CLEV has a monthly Safety Event to
encourage learning and provide a measuring tool for the operation’s
staff.
5. 1. Target Practice – this allows a station to focus on their biggest area
of opportunity – 2nd van drivers. (The PROACTIVE approach)
2. Meetings held once a week to once a quarter depending on the
operation. Held off the dock or off site.
3. Information gathered from MyGroundBiz or thru inviting the Safety
Specialist to present on a topic of the AO’s choosing.
4. Professional driver? – presentations ask “What Would You Do in
this situation?” and / or reference “What a Professional Would Do”
5. Ownership – the goal is to have the AO or BC conduct their own
meetings. This has begun to transition at CLEV.
