Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
Gene Campaign Family Nutrition Informational Pamphlet
1. Why is proper nutrition
important?
A proper, balanced nutritious diet is a major
element of a person's, especially a child's,
development and health. Feeling full is not
enough! Nutrition is eating enough foods that
contain vitamins, minerals, calcium and protein.
These micronutrients can be found in fruits,
vegetables, dairy, beans, and dal. Also, it is
important to know that children need more
nutrients than adults because their bodies and
brains are still developing.
The Negative effects of
Malnutrition:
1. Increased risk of sickness and death
2. Greater risk of infections and infectious
diseases
3. Greater chance of health risks for mothers
and their newborn babies
4. Low education achievements in children
5. Deterioration of general health, quality of life,
and human development
6. Loss in work productivity and ability to earn
wages
7. Longer length of hospital stays and greater
healthcare costs due to chronic illness and
weakness
Elements of a Nutritious Diet
Vitamins and Minerals
The human body needs vitamins and minerals
because they enable it to grow, develop, and
function properly allowing a person to live a long,
healthy life. Vitamins help the body produce
energy, remove waste, and build muscles.
Minerals are needed to build healthy bones and
ensure organ function.
Calcium and Protein
People need to include calcium and protein in
their diet because it helps our heart, muscles,
and nerves to develop and function properly.
Children who do not have enough calcium
become weak because their bones do not
develop correctly. A lack of protein inhibits child
growth and causes a decrease in energy.

2. The Importance of Breast Milk
The first two years of a child's life is a critical time to
ensure proper nutrition because this is the time
when the major organs, including the brain, develop
the most. A malnourished infant will be unhealthy for
the rest of its life. One of the most important
sources of nutrition during this time is breast milk
and doctors in India and around the world
recommend that a mother breastfeed her child for
the at least the first two years of the child's life.

Children's Nutrition
Low-birth-weight in babies and chronic malnutrition
throughout a child's life due to a lack of nutritious
foods causes many adverse health effects both
during childhood and adulthood. Some of the health
effects include: stunted growth and physical
development which can cause the child to be
smaller and weaker than their peers, brain
development retardation which will cause children
to struggle greatly in school, greater risk of
diarrhea which is one of the most common causes
of death in children under 5 years of age around the
world, and illness throughout the entirety of their
life which will effect their chances to find work and
their quality of life.
