Rework book by 37signals

 1. 1. Book Review:
Rework by Jason Fried founder of 37 Signals
By @JoakimNilsson
http://joakimnilsson.com
2. 2. Lear from success rather than mistakes
Learning from mistakes is overrated. How likely are you to repeat the same mistakes? Learn from success instead, the things that made you successful at something are the things you should learn from.
3. 3. Our culture celibrates the workaholic
“Workaholics wind up creating more problems than they solve. First off, working like that just isn’t sustainable over time. When the burnout crash comes - and it will- it’ll hit that much harder.”
4. 4. Meetings are toxic
Meeting require preparation, that no one has time for, in-order to be productive. Meetings lead to more meetings and often ends up in discussions off topic.
5. 5. Stay small
Why grow your organisation? Does that make you better at what you’re good at? Is your sole aim to grow just to become big? What cost comes with growing and managing a large organisation? Not only cost as in dollars, but cost as in doing what you’re really good at.
6. 6. Launch your product
Unless you’re sending people into space you can fix problems later. Get your product launched and work on the details later. You won’t be able to foresee everything anyway. Ignore details early on.
7. 7. Don’t copy and don’t worry about competition.
Who cares what your competitors do, focus on your way forward and what your audience wants. Share your vision and roadmap, people can copy it but that cannot copy being you.
8. 8. Build an audience
All companies has customers, lucky ones has an audience. Do you need to buy ads to get seen or do people come to you? Do they have a reason to come to you? What do you share with them?
9. 9. Out-teach your competition
Chefs write cook books. No one is going to steal there recipe and put them out of business. What do you teach your audience?
10. 10. Marketing is not a department
Everything you do is marketing. Every time you pick up the phone, write on your site, launch a product. It’s not a department; it’s more than advertising and sales. Everything you do shapes that way you market your business.
11. 11. Before you hire, do it yourself first
Hire carefully. Push it to the edge before you get more people in. Make sure you know what the job is about. There’s nothing worse than hiring talent and needing to invent projects.
