2. LYRICS
The opening line is ‘Baby you don’t have to keep looking through my
phone’. This is then matched up with a female laying down scrolling
through a phone so the opening lyrics. ‘We can’t even say two words
without a fight anymore’ whilst the woman throws her phone down and a
text comes up ‘did you see the pics?’ When the chorus ‘on the other side
of love’ is sang, there is always a clip of the female in the water or the
male doing his own thing, showing us what it is like on the other side of
love when it is not always bright and colourful.
3. NARRATIVE
We see a female who looks like she is living a good life until the song starts
when we see her upset on her bed checking her phone and then receiving a
text asking if she saw pictures which puts her in a bad mood and lowers the
tone. We see the male on the bed with the female sitting behind him looking
downbeat like something is wrong. We also see the woman carrying on from
the start clip, in the sun under a waterfall looking like she is having a good
time. We then see the male in his Ferrari like he is now also living a high life
‘on the other side of love’. We then see the male out with a female and he is
giving her a present and they are out in a nice restaurant as she is dressed
up for the occasion with jewellery on, but then the other woman is in a white
dress and she looks quite downbeat but then he gives her a present and a
phone. She replies to the text from earlier on in the video,
4. GENRE
The genre of this song is a Pop Song. We can tell this by the upbeat
modern music with the lyrics being relatable to modern life. We can also
see the lifestyle they are both leading with the lives they are leading with
the picturesque waterfalls and the holidays that she has. The Male also
has the Ferrari that he drives which shows the wealth he has. These are
all the conventions of a Pop Song.
5. MISE EN SCENE
The mise en scene of the music video is quite cheerful, even though the
girl looks sad when she is looking at her phone. We then see a text and it
relates back to them texts. There is a lot of bright lighting apart from the
end when she gets given the present. The woman is wearing a white
dress at the end but at the start it is a black piece of clothing and the
bikini. This could represent the other side of love as black and white are
the contrasts.
6. MUSIC
There is a slow beat to start when the lyrics come in. It seems to be a
piano until Sean Paul gets to the chorus then more lyrics come in and
create a deeper tune. This seems to be an edited sound which makes the
beat. This beat then carries through the whole way of the song, until the
last line or two which it then tones down to the tune that we heard at the
start. This then carries us out to the end of the song.
7. VOYEURISM
There is a female in the video who is pictured under a waterfall. She is
seen to be in a swimsuit which is quite revealing. We then see the same
woman who is laying on her side with her phone wearing a top which is
revealing her breasts. The man is clothed in casual wear, as we the see
the camera zoom into her lace bra strap showing off the sexual side of the
video which is a common factor in modern R&B music videos. The shower
scenes keep coming back along with the lace bra shot. Then towards the
end the ladies are wearing dresses to show the classy side of them and
not the promiscuous side of them.
8. CAMERA WORK
The camera work in the video is clever the way that it can portray the
people. We see a close up of the water droplets as the woman is under
the waterfall. We see plenty of cuts which go back and forth between the
male and the female. We also see the pan alongside his car showing how
he is a wealthy man. We can also see the looks on their faces which can
help us tell the story.
