2015 Walk to End Alzheimer’s
More than 5,000 caregivers, advocates and supporters united across Maryland
in a movement to reclaim the future of millions affected byAlzheimer’s disease.
Participants raised over $1 MILLION to fund Alzheimer’s care, research
and support programs, the most in Greater Maryland Chapter history!
Thanks to all of your support, hard work and dedication in the fight against
Alzheimer’s. Because of your efforts, we are closer to the vision of a world
without Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s diesease is a growing epidemic,and is now the nation’s 6th leading
cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with
Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate increasing well beyond today’s more
than five million Americans.In Maryland alone,there are 99,000 people living
with Alzheimer’s and more than 298,000 caregivers supporting them.

Howard County Walk
Fall usually means school starting,
the leaves changing color, and
football, but for the Alzheimer’s
Association,it meansWalk season!
Our firstWalk of 2015 Kicked off
at Centennial Park on Saturday,
September 26th for the Howard
CountyWalk to EndAlzheimer’s!
We had a record breaking year
in Howard County, with over
1,100 Walkers in attendance.
DerekValcourt ofWJZ 13 led the
Walkers in a beautiful opening
ceremony and the Chick-fil-A cow cut the ribbon to start the
Walk! Walkers danced, played games and had a great time!
The Howard County Walk in September
marked Jennifer’s 12th consecutive year
participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Since 2004, Jennifer and her team, Forbes
Family and Friends, have worked tirelessly to
raise awareness and fundraise for Alzheimer’s
research and care. Jennifer, who has served as
a team captain for the last 10 years, walks in
honor of her father and her aunt, who both
lost their battles to Alzheimer’s. In addition,
Jennifer walks to honor the “herculean”
efforts of caregivers who are endlessly
devoted to their loved ones.“Our family is very
passionate about our mission and we feel
extremely privileged to be able to join the
Alzheimer’s Associtaion each year to help make strides towards creating a
world that will be remembered by all.” Team Forbes Family and Friends’
success in fundraising each year can be attributed to their devotion to the
cause. Jennifer and her team have developed fun, creative ways to increase
fundraising including benefit shows at local pubs where members of her
family perform and donate their compensation and tips to the Walk. This
year, Jennifer and Team Forbes Family an Friends raised over $11,000.

Lauren Weinhold participated in her very first
Howard County Walk to End Alzheimer’s this
year. Lauren was the team captain for Team
EAC (Elkridge Athletic Club) who raised a
total of $4,938. Not only is Lauren a dedicated
and driven team captain, but she is an active
member of the Howard County Walk planning
committee, contributing to the event’s growing
success. Lauren walks in memory of her
grandmother who suffered from dementia.
“I walk for my maternal grandmother, Marie
Eileen Norris. She passed in 2006, after
many years of struggle with dementia. Her
spirit lives on through my mother and my
sisters, committed to honoring our sweet
Nana,” Lauren says. Thank you Lauren for

positive impact in the fight to end Alzheimer’s!

Walkers, the Baltimore Walk to End
Alzheimer’s was the most successful
in history! As you know, we surpassed
our goal on Walk day! To date, you,
other Walkers and our sponsors have
raised over $320,000. We could not do
this without you! You all simply outdid
yourselves! On a beautiful Fall day,
Walkers of all ages came dressed for
Halloween.Trick-or-Treaterswerehappy
with the sweets they recieved from
Debbie Saraullo continues to make a difference for those battling
Alzheimer’s. Not only is she a dedicated volunteer at the Alzheimer’s
Association, but she also founded her own business, Inhome Advantage,
which is devoted to supporting and caring for seniors whose independence is
challenged. Debbie’s motivation stems from her personal connection to
Alzheimer’s. Throughout the years, she has watched several family members
and friends fight long, courageous battles against the disease. Her time at the
Alzheimer’s Association has allowed Debbie to give back and has provided her

Brittany Van Divner walks in honor of her dad, who was diagnosed with
early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2014, at the age of 56. This year Brittany’s
team, A Walk to Remember-Unbind The Mind, joined forces with
Waverly Construction & Management. Together, they raised almost
$10,000! The two groups made the decision to collaborate after
Alzheimer’s disease touched the Waverly Construction & Management
community. “To have two families within one company have members with the
disease is few and far between,” says Brittany. During the fundraising process,

Supporters came out in full force on a
beautiful day in Frederick, with a turnout of
1,294 Walkers. Those participating raised an
incredible $238,185. Maryland U.S. Senator
Ben Cardin came out to the event to
thank the Walkers for supporting the
Alzheimer’s Association. “Billions of dollars
are spent taking care of those with
Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia
on Medicare and Medicaid. Organizations
like the Alzheimer’s Association bring us
one step closer to a cure” Senator
Ben Cardin said. Thank you to all the
Walkers,sponsors,volunteers,donors,planning
committee members and staff for making
this year’s Western Maryland Walk to End
Alzheimer’s such a huge success!

Al Clapp andTeam Marie were this year’s top
fundraising team at the Western Maryland
Walk to End Alzheimer’s, bringing in a total
of $10,305! Team Marie has been walking
since 2009 in honor ofAl Clapp’s wife,Marie,
who was diagnosed with Frontotemporal
Dementia that same year. The year before
Marie was diagnosed was her first year of
retirement, where Marie and Al looked
forward to spending much of the year
in Florida. But sadly, as Marie’s condition
worsened, she lost the ability to perform
Kathy Siggins was the top fundraiser at this
year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Frederick.
Kathy has been walking since 1994 in honor
of her late husband, who was diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s disease in 1990.After his 13 year
battle with the disease, ending in 1999, the
Walk became an even bigger part of her life.
“By continuing to walk in his memory, I can
guarantee that the additional services available
now through the Alzheimer’s Association,
that were not available to me as a caregiver,
continue to be available to the families who have recieved a diagnosis and are
now living with this horrible disease. They need all the support they can
get. My first walk was the hardest and I almost quit before starting, but thanks
to the encouragement and support of family and close friends I was able to
raise a total of $230. Since then, my support each year has grown and many
people from the first walk 22 year ago are still with me today.”Thank you Kathy
for the years of support and continued effort in the fight to end Alzheimer’s!

and mother, a responsible professional, an active church member and community
volunteer. She now lives at Country MeadowsAssisted Living in Frederick,where the
transition has been heartbreaking to see, as she experiences more and more difficulty
with walking,speaking,recognizing her loved ones and recalling cherished memories.”

The streets of Salisbury were
filled with supporters wearing
purple on a sunny day last
October. Raising more than
$72,000, the crowd cheered
when David Caldwell, evening
anchor for WMDTV 47, cut
the ribbon to begin the Walk.
“I was honored to be asked to
be Master of Ceremonies and
speak at the Eastern Shore’s
Susan Purnell was the leading
fundraiser at this year’s Eastern
Shore Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Through her dedication to ending
Alzheimer’s, she raised a grand total
of $5,460. Having to witness what
Alzheimer’s does to her own mother,
Susan is determined to finding a cure.
“I know how devastating dementia
can be to a family. I watched as my
Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I had a chance to speak about my father and
to witness the passion and enthusiasm generated by over 550 people
dedicating each step they took to ending Alzheimer’s.” David
Caldwell said in a letter to all his supporters. Thank you to all the
Walkers, sponsors, volunteers, donors, planning committee members and
staff for their help in the fight to end Alzheimer’s!
intelligent, active, and vibrant mother succumbed to the memory loss and
devastation of Alzheimer’s disease. After seeing what dementia did to
my mother and the affect it had on our whole family, I knew I had to
step up and support the cause to end Alzheimer’s.” Thank you Susan
for helping bring the fight to end Alzheimer’s one step closer to a cure!

Eastern Shore Alzheimer’s Association office. Since then, Rhonda has served
as a Board member of the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern Shore as well

Volunteer Spotlight
Gail works for Chesapeake Bank of Maryland, who is a proud sponsor of the
Walk. Gail’s passion comes from her personal experience as her sister Nancy is
living with Alzheimer’s. Gail previously served as the Chair for the Baltimore
JDRF OneWalk for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.After her sister’s
diagnosis in February, she decided to put her experience to work and volunteer

Kat is committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s research, care,
and support.The Harford Walk marked Kat’s 6th consecutive year participating
in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Kat, who is a member of team Maas Family
and Friends, walks in the honor of her loved ones who have been touched
by Alzheimer’s. Her mother has been battling the disease for almost 15
years and her great aunt and uncle both lost their fight to Alzheimer’s.
Always looking for new ways to fundraise, this year Kat and her team created
for the Alzheimer’s Association. Since
becoming an active committee member,
Gail also organized her own team for the
Walk.Gail began recruiting for her team,
The Bauer Bunch, in July, and by Walk
day she had the largest team in Harford
County.Gail’s hard work and dedication
to the cause paid off when The Bauer
Bunch became the highest fundraising
team in Harford County. “I encourage
everyone who is touched by this disease
to get involved. It was truly a truly rewarding experience.” says Gail. Team
Bauer Bunch brought in over $6,000! Thank you for your hard work Gail!
and held basket bingo as a fundraising
event.“The fundraiser was a huge success
and brought our team even closer
together,” says Kat. In her continued
fundraising efforts, Kat brought in over
$1000 for team Maas Family and
Friends. On Walk day, Mass Family
and Friends finished as the second
highest fundraising team for Harford
County. Thank you, Kat, for joining
us in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s!

Volunteer Spotlight
Anne Arundel County Walk
Thank you to everyone who made
the 2015 Anne Arundel County Walk
to End Alzheimer’s a success! This
year, over 700 Walkers participated,
and the Alzheimer’s Association
surpassed its initial goal with over
$150,000! We could not do this with-
out you! Making this year’s Walk even
more special was the crew over at
Dogfish Head Alehouse who host-
ed a wonderful post-Walk party and
Champions Village for walkers and
colunteers filled with food, drinks,
entertainment and fun! Thanks to all Walkers, sponsors, volunteers, donors,
planning committee members and staff for helping us achieve our goal and
making this year’s Anne Arundel County Walk so special!
Lauren Ridzon’s dedication to raising funds and
community awareness dates back to her first
Walk in 2008. Losing both her maternal
Grandmother and Grandfather to Alzheimer’s,
Lauren committed to walking in their memory
and their honor. Recruting family, friends, coworkers
and members of the community, Lauren’s succesful
team effort was a strong reminder that everyone
has a reason to walk to end Alzheimer’s. Beyond
the team, Lauren was a key member of the Walk
committee, providing support to our team recruiting
and sponsorship development activities. In addition,
Lauren inspired her parents, Joe and Bev Hospital,
the owners of Dogfish head Alehouse, to sponsor our Post-Walk commemorative
celebration. She brought her husband Steve Ridzon, to shoot candids
and stills at Lauren’s recruiting and planning events as well as his company,
Steve Ridzon Photography, in as a walk day sponsor. Lauren was a cornerstone
for our 2015 success and truly deserving of the volunteer spotlight!
Claire Carroll dedicated her life to the
Catholic Church, working for 26 years at St.
Pius X School in Bowie,Maryland.Known for
recognizing, remembering and bringing cheer
to three decades of students, Claire suffered a
massive heart attack in 2005. She recovered
from open heart surgery, only to find
Alzheimer’s stealing her memories. Claire
and her husband knew they needed help,
and found what they were looking for in the
Alzheimer’s Association. In 2010, Claire’s
Crusader’s participated in their first Walk to
End Alzheimer’s. Led by Pam Silvers and Jessica, Owenby, Claire’s
Crusaders have finished as a top ten fundraising team every year since they
started. Their main fundraising event has been a benefit in Claire’s honor
held at a friend’s establishment featuring 50/50 raffles and silent auctions
and strongly supported by friends and local businesses. Committed to raising
money for a cure, Pam and Jessica raised $8,951 in 2015. Congratulations
on the years of success and hard work towards fundraising for the fight
to end Alzheimer’s.
