A Look At Apple’s Patent For Liquid Metal Materials
johnkangwebmd John Kang WebMD July 24, 2018 1 Minute
At the start of this year, tech giant Apple secured 40 patents, including two involving liquid metal materials. These liquid metal concepts are related
to glasses made of nickel, phosphorus, and boron and contain niobium, tantalum, and manganese.
This is a significant development as it reinforces Apple’s commitment to using liquid metal in its upcoming models of the iPhone and other devices.
It acquired the patents from a company which produces liquid metals with a high hardness factor. These new patents cover inventions related to
both production methods and the metallic glass alloy feedstock.

The metallic alloy can be shaped into high-aspect-ratio articles, using a technique called rapid capacitive discharge forming. Liquid metal is
becoming a key component in Apple’s myriad consumer electronic devices, while now also a widespread material used in dental prosthetics,
medical implants, watches, and even sporting goods.
2. Apple had exclusive rights to Liquidmetal Technologies until 2016, investing heavily on the high-strength metal for its current and future devices.
The main advantage of liquid metal is that it can be processed like plastic. Even NASA says that it is poised to change how we look at materials
science in the 21st century.
