Dave Spence,
There are a myriad of problems and solutions to the Ferguson
issue. In addition, there are many great people and organi-
zations working on the ground with viable solutions. Ferguson
1000 Jobs has placed our focus on the areas of job creation
as one of the solutions. We will continue to work with other
organizations to address the needs of the community while
providing real answers to job creation. One of our initiatives
is a focus on technology.
As we develop strategies for job creation for Ferguson and
surrounding areas, part of the solution should be technology. Granted, the tech industry here
is tiny by comparison, but St. Louis is starting to show up in statistics as a growth market. Bu-
reau of Labor Statistics numbers confirm that in one key category, computer systems design,
Missouri led the nation in percentage growth l. The technology scene in St. Louis is being
profiled across the country as an up and coming tech city. We must integrate Ferguson and
surrounding areas in this technology growth.
There is a direct correlation between Ferguson , Mo. (St. Louis) and technology. Many African
Americans who grew up in St. Louis, got a good education, secured good jobs at McDonnell
Douglas (now Boeing), General Motors, Chrysler, Emerson Electric (Technology companies)
or elsewhere, and are better off economically, moved into various suburban communities in
North St. Louis County — Normandy, Florissant, Bellefontaine Neighbors, Jennings, Berkeley.
Dellwood and elsewhere. This illustrates how technology jobs contributed to our economy
and stable neighborhoods.
Technology jobs and training with an emphasis on inclusion will not only benefit the African
American community but our St. Louis region as a whole as new products and a more tech-
nological workforce is developed.
Technology isn’t the only answer for Ferguson, but it integrates all parts of our lives. This is
simply one step in the positive direction for growth in Ferguson and our entire region. We
have the opportunity to change the face of the bad press that our city has seen over the last
3 months. We will continue with your help to target those companies that want to help rebuild
Ferguson and surrounding communities through jobs in all facets of the industry, especially
those in technology.

The Ferguson 1000 Report Card
“You can NOT solve economic problems with
social solutions”
Dr. E. Lance McCarthy, COO
Ferguson 1000
While the world watched Ferguson, Mo in August of 2014
and a year later, it is useful to examine how this inner-ring
suburb is emblematic of many unfortunate economic trends in America. In 2010, the
town was more than 67 percent African-American, a demographic particularly hit
hard not only by the Great Recession but by disruptions with a longer arc.
As of July, the national unemployment rate for African-Americans was 12.2 percent.
For those aged 16 to 19, it was a staggering 36.8 percent (a year earlier, it had
been 42.9 percent). For whites, the comparable numbers in July 2014 were 5.6
percent and 18.9 percent.
While economists may be searching for definitive answers, some historical facts
present themselves. St. Louis is a classic example of a city that experienced massive
white flight, going from 857,000 in 1950 to 318,000 last year. St. Louis County
went from rural and small towns to suburbia. A few suburbs, such as Ferguson, lat-
er attracted African-Americans. Like all Midwest metros, St. Louis also suffered as
factories closed, work was sent offshore and local companies were lost to mergers.
The jobs that once provided a ladder up for minorities — when discrimination was
not prevalent — went away. Public transportation wasn’t adequate between poor
areas and job centers.
Ferguson 1000 was created to address the economic woes of Ferguson and the
entire St. Louis region. We knew by creating a platform of job creation and minority
business development, we would strike a chord with all who wanted a better region
for our children. We decided to work on 3 areas of demographics. The first being
the “Entry Level” person who needs job readiness training and assistance in gaining
employment. Second, we focused on the “Underemployed”, who is the educated Af-
rican American who needs assistance in navigating upward mobility in their career.
Lastly, we focused on the “African American Entrepreneur”. Statistics say that growth
in minority businesses will help decrease minority unemployment.
Now 100 corporate and community partners, 1000 jobs posted, over 200 people
placed, we believe we have made an impact in the economics of Ferguson and the
entire St. Louis region. We thank all of those who have supported our initiative and
look forward to having long term impact.

Entrepreneurship at First-Ever White House Demo Day
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Obama will host the first-ever
White House Demo Day focused on inclusive entrepreneurship, wel-
coming startup founders from diverse walks of life and from across
the country to showcase their innovations. The President will an-
nounce new public- and private-sector commitments that promise to
provide more Americans with the opportunity to pursue their bold,
game-changing ideas.
America’s entrepreneurial economy is the envy of the world. But, we
need to do more to make sure that we are tapping our full entrepre-
neurial potential – drawing on talented Americans from all back-
grounds and locations.
Just three percent of America’s venture capital-backed startups are led
by women, and only around one percent are led by African-Americans.
At present, only about four percent of U.S.-based venture capital inves-
tors are women. And, capital for innovative startups is predominantly
available in just a few places, making high-growth business creation a
challenge outside of a handful of metro hubs.
To maintain our lead as the best place on the planet to start and scale a
great company, we must ensure that vibrant startup ecosystems emerge
in every corner of America, and that all Americans, including those
underrepresented in entrepreneurship like women and people of color,
are both encouraged and able to fully contribute their entrepreneurial
talents.

Ferguson1000-Reception Program

  • 1.
  • 2. A HIRE POWER HIRING EVENT | A HIRE POWER HIRING EVENT | ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE | ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY Dave Spence, There are a myriad of problems and solutions to the Ferguson issue. In addition, there are many great people and organi- zations working on the ground with viable solutions. Ferguson 1000 Jobs has placed our focus on the areas of job creation as one of the solutions. We will continue to work with other organizations to address the needs of the community while providing real answers to job creation. One of our initiatives is a focus on technology. As we develop strategies for job creation for Ferguson and surrounding areas, part of the solution should be technology. Granted, the tech industry here is tiny by comparison, but St. Louis is starting to show up in statistics as a growth market. Bu- reau of Labor Statistics numbers confirm that in one key category, computer systems design, Missouri led the nation in percentage growth l. The technology scene in St. Louis is being profiled across the country as an up and coming tech city. We must integrate Ferguson and surrounding areas in this technology growth. There is a direct correlation between Ferguson , Mo. (St. Louis) and technology. Many African Americans who grew up in St. Louis, got a good education, secured good jobs at McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing), General Motors, Chrysler, Emerson Electric (Technology companies) or elsewhere, and are better off economically, moved into various suburban communities in North St. Louis County — Normandy, Florissant, Bellefontaine Neighbors, Jennings, Berkeley. Dellwood and elsewhere. This illustrates how technology jobs contributed to our economy and stable neighborhoods. Technology jobs and training with an emphasis on inclusion will not only benefit the African American community but our St. Louis region as a whole as new products and a more tech- nological workforce is developed. Technology isn’t the only answer for Ferguson, but it integrates all parts of our lives. This is simply one step in the positive direction for growth in Ferguson and our entire region. We have the opportunity to change the face of the bad press that our city has seen over the last 3 months. We will continue with your help to target those companies that want to help rebuild Ferguson and surrounding communities through jobs in all facets of the industry, especially those in technology. Dave Spence CEO Ferguson 1000

  • 6. A HIRE POWER HIRING EVENT | A HIRE POWER HIRING EVENT | ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE | ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY The Ferguson 1000 Report Card “You can NOT solve economic problems with social solutions” Dr. E. Lance McCarthy, COO Ferguson 1000 While the world watched Ferguson, Mo in August of 2014 and a year later, it is useful to examine how this inner-ring suburb is emblematic of many unfortunate economic trends in America. In 2010, the town was more than 67 percent African-American, a demographic particularly hit hard not only by the Great Recession but by disruptions with a longer arc. As of July, the national unemployment rate for African-Americans was 12.2 percent. For those aged 16 to 19, it was a staggering 36.8 percent (a year earlier, it had been 42.9 percent). For whites, the comparable numbers in July 2014 were 5.6 percent and 18.9 percent. While economists may be searching for definitive answers, some historical facts present themselves. St. Louis is a classic example of a city that experienced massive white flight, going from 857,000 in 1950 to 318,000 last year. St. Louis County went from rural and small towns to suburbia. A few suburbs, such as Ferguson, lat- er attracted African-Americans. Like all Midwest metros, St. Louis also suffered as factories closed, work was sent offshore and local companies were lost to mergers. The jobs that once provided a ladder up for minorities — when discrimination was not prevalent — went away. Public transportation wasn’t adequate between poor areas and job centers. Ferguson 1000 was created to address the economic woes of Ferguson and the entire St. Louis region. We knew by creating a platform of job creation and minority business development, we would strike a chord with all who wanted a better region for our children. We decided to work on 3 areas of demographics. The first being the “Entry Level” person who needs job readiness training and assistance in gaining employment. Second, we focused on the “Underemployed”, who is the educated Af- rican American who needs assistance in navigating upward mobility in their career. Lastly, we focused on the “African American Entrepreneur”. Statistics say that growth in minority businesses will help decrease minority unemployment. Now 100 corporate and community partners, 1000 jobs posted, over 200 people placed, we believe we have made an impact in the economics of Ferguson and the entire St. Louis region. We thank all of those who have supported our initiative and look forward to having long term impact.

  • 15. A HIRE POWER HIRING EVENT | A HIRE POWER HIRING EVENT Y COLLEGE | ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE Entrepreneurship at First-Ever White House Demo Day WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Obama will host the first-ever White House Demo Day focused on inclusive entrepreneurship, wel- coming startup founders from diverse walks of life and from across the country to showcase their innovations. The President will an- nounce new public- and private-sector commitments that promise to provide more Americans with the opportunity to pursue their bold, game-changing ideas. America’s entrepreneurial economy is the envy of the world. But, we need to do more to make sure that we are tapping our full entrepre- neurial potential – drawing on talented Americans from all back- grounds and locations. Just three percent of America’s venture capital-backed startups are led by women, and only around one percent are led by African-Americans. At present, only about four percent of U.S.-based venture capital inves- tors are women. And, capital for innovative startups is predominantly available in just a few places, making high-growth business creation a challenge outside of a handful of metro hubs. To maintain our lead as the best place on the planet to start and scale a great company, we must ensure that vibrant startup ecosystems emerge in every corner of America, and that all Americans, including those underrepresented in entrepreneurship like women and people of color, are both encouraged and able to fully contribute their entrepreneurial talents.
