  2. 2. What is a pronoun? Pronouns take the place of nouns. When a pronoun replaces a noun it is known as an Antecedent. Some examples of Antecedents are: He, She, They, Their, I, Us, We, Them, It, It’s.
  3. 3. How do we use pronouns and antecedents? We commonly use them all the time! For example: Presidents Day is one of my favorite holidays. It is celebrated in February. We know Presidents Day is a noun and It is a pronoun that refers to the antecedent, Presidents Day.
  4. 4. Where do we see mistakes with pronouns in writing? Commonly in academic writing, instructors encourage you to use factual research. This causes some errors for new writers. The biggest mistake that involves pronouns and antecedents is when writers use sources with more than one author and often forget to switch to identify who they are writing about. For Example: “Dr. Rollens and Professor Demetri conducted research in the field of early childhood development. He discovered that minor trauma can have a major impact later on in life.” Here the writer introduced two authors who are qualified to speak on their topic. However, in the following sentence the author uses He without referring to who they were writing about. The importance of identifiers need to have emphasis.
  5. 5. Applying how we speak to writing. When you are speaking to a friend you might say something like, “Isn’t she a beauty?” Who is she? Is it a girl, a cat, a motorcycle? You may be speaking about your brand new car! When you and your friend are looking at something and can identify it, it supports the antecedent. However, This is another common mistake when it comes to how you use pronouns and antecedents without identifying the original noun in writing.
  6. 6. How to properly use antecedents and pronouns “Dr. Rollens with Professor Demetri conducted research in the field of early childhood development. He discovered that minor trauma can have a major impact later on in life.” In this case we changed and to with making, He in the next sentence definitely refer to Dr. Rollens. “Dr. Rollens and Professor Demetri conducted research in the field of early childhood development. They discovered that minor trauma can have a major impact later on in life.” This is another way to fix the sentence. If they conducted the research together you would change He to They in the next sentence. “Both of their research helped changed the lives of many adults who were unable to convey stress they underwent as children.” If this sentence followed our other example we would know that Their research is referring to Dr. Rollens and Professor Demetri. We also know They is referring to the adults we identified earlier in the sentence. Writers must pay careful attention to these minor details to help support their writing.

Tips for writing • Make sure to properly identify what or who the pronoun is referring to. • Be careful when using It while writing for this is one of the trickiest antecedents. • Be sure when you are writing lengthy paragraphs to reiterate who the antecedent is referring to. • Do not overuse antecedents. Papers can become lackluster if you use to many due to lack of word variety.
