Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 2 Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING Introduction An addiction is a chronic dysfunction of the brain system that involves reward, motivation, and memory. Gambling problems can happen to anyone from any walk of life. It can strain your relationships, interfere with work, and lead to financial disaster. Your gambling goes from fun, harmless diversion to unhealthy obsession. "Online- sabong" can easily be accessible to users through their smartphones, with transactions made via online-cash-apps. There is no regulation over who is allowed or not to participate in the activity. You may even do things you never thought you would, like running up huge debts or even stealing money to gamble. If you're a compulsive gambler, you can't control the impulse to gamble, even when it has negative consequences for you or your loved ones. Many people are addicted to gambling because of how easy it is to participate. The folk-psychological notion of weakness of will invoked above is an instance of a broader phenomenon of the switch from rational controlled processing to a more intuitive mode of processing (Neil Levy (2011). While some philosophers have been skeptical of this standard, it can provide a useful starting point for investigating out of temptation to addiction. This work seems to provide evidence that addicted people's in online sabong related judgements and decisions are often driven by automatic processes, which operate outside conscious control. 1 1 1 1
  3. 3. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 3 The objective of this study is to provide self-control and its loss in online gambling addiction. We conducted this research because it is a pertinent subject that is being addressed around the Philippines, and we want to focus on it or provide a constructive answer to individuals who are fascinated to this gambling. We know that its players are beyond our control since, for at least a major subset of addicted internet gambling sufferers, the fundamental issue may not be a lack of exhaustion of cognitive resources connected with self-control. Instead, individuals may lack faith in their abilities to exert control over their external circumstances. The significance of this study is to help people to be out of temptation to addiction. Its purpose is to make clear why gamblers should stop online sabong gambling. Recognizing that you have a gambling issue is the first step toward recovery. The benefits of stopping gambling are the ability to save more money for yourself or your family. It only helps you avoid expenses because your money is now invested in high- yielding investments. It gives your life a new beginning or chapter where you do not have to settle for something that is unpredictable. Instead, you will know how to be content with what you have right now even without gambling. This is why quitting can be relevant for everyone who lost control over their gambling habit. Gambling has become significantly more accessible thanks to the Internet, making it more difficult for recovered addicts to avoid relapses. Don't get discouraged, and don't go it alone - this research attempts to help people avoid becoming addicted.
  4. 4. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 4 Theoretical Framework This study is mainly anchored in Social learning theory, proposed by Albert Bandura, which emphasizes the importance of observing, modeling, and imitating behaviors, and attitudes. This social learning theory considers how both environmental and cognitive factors interact to influence human learning and behavior. Hence social learning theory maintains that individual models, learned, and behaviors are observed. As such parents and family numbers can often serve as significant models for gambling. Gambling is considered a learned behavior in this social learning theory approach. Imitating addictive behavior is one example. A person becomes addicted to observing and learning from their environment. Furthermore, as per genetic theories, addiction runs in families. Besides that, the addictive inheritance genetic theory aims to distinguish the genetic and environmental components that influence addictive behavior. According to this notion, children born to gamblers' parents can become gamblers themselves. Indeed, children born and raised by gamblers have a higher risk of developing a gambling addiction. This theory aids the researcher since it indicates that addiction is passed down throughout generations of addicts, such as parents. Which genetic theory claims that this addictive habit runs in families. As a result, genetic predispositions to gambling addiction occur.

  6. 6. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 6 Using statistical/descriptive analysis of the data we will be collected, we are going to show how the independent variable exhibits significant relationship to our dependent variable. Boxes 1 and 2 shows the study's conceptual framework. Excessive participation to online gambling, is the indicators of victims of online sabong that appear in the independent variable, whereas addiction, depression, severe debt, distress, and mood disorder are the effects of those indicators that appear in the dependent variable. Based on the empirical evidence from the study, these two variables are directly related. As presented, these factors clearly have a large influence and effect on the lives of people who have been involved in this massive societal problem, affecting not only their lives but, more importantly, their mental health and well-being. Statement of the Problem This research will be carried out intending to determine what causes gamblers to become addicted to online gambling. The following questions will be addressed by this research: 1. What motivates you to join online sabong? 2. What are your personal encounters in joining online sabong? 3. What is your financial management in sourcing out your capital in gambling?
  7. 7. Definition of Terms For the purpose of clarity and understanding of the study the following terms are defined conceptually and operationally. Addiction. Addiction is repeated involvement with a substance or activity, despite the substantial harm it now causes, because that involvement was (and may continue to be) pleasurable and/or valuable. Cockfighters. A person who breeds or trains fighting cocks, holds or attends cockfights, or is otherwise involved in cockfighting. Online Gambling. More commonly known as Internet gambling, is typically betting on casino or sports type games over the Internet. Phenomenological. The study of “phenomena”: appearances of things, or things as they appear in our experience, or the ways we experience things, thus the meanings things have in our experience. Temptation. The desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise.
  9. 9. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 9 Chapter 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter discusses the relevant literature and studies that the researcher used to justify the current study's value. It also includes a summary of the topic in order to fully comprehend the research and gain a better understanding of the study. DEFINITION OF ONLINE SABONG Sabong is a Filipino word that refers to cockfighting, a long-standing tradition in the Philippines dating back three thousand (3,000) years. The sport consists of pitting two cocks against each other to see which one is superior. The sport is always bloody, and people sometimes wrap weapons around the cocks' legs to make it more exciting. Because the match only ends when a cock dies, some refer to it as a fight to the finish. People gather in arenas to watch and cheer on the cocks as they tear each other apart. Sabong is the best pastime sport in the Philippines and the only activity enjoyed by both the rich and the poor. E-Sabong, on the other hand, is defined as wagering/betting on live cockfighting matches, events, and/or activities streamed or broadcasted live from cockpit arena/s licensed or authorized by the Local Government Units having jurisdiction thereof. HISTORY OF ONLINE SABONG GAMBLING
  10. 10. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 10 Gambling has existed in the Philippines since the sixteenth century and is still popular today. It is currently found in a variety of legal and illegal forms throughout the archipelago. If gambling casinos are bad, online gambling sites are even worse. Online gambling stations are Internet cafes that specialize in gambling games. Online gambling has grown in popularity; in fact, according to Barcelo and Ramos-Araneta (2019), the online gambling industry is now the second largest demand driver for office space in the Philippines. Online gambling is available in the office, residential communities, and even schools. You can begin playing your game of chance by using the Internet. Many students become addicted to gambling because it can become a habit. Children end up spending more time at these stations than at home or school. Adults, on the other hand, may find themselves with depleted savings, massive debts, or, worse, a life-threatening future. Gambling has destroyed families, careers, and even lives throughout history. Crime is a visible issue that is always linked to gambling. Online gambling poses an immediate and widespread threat to the well-being of Filipino youth. Motivational Factors of Online Sabong There are many motivational factors about online gambling and reasons why gamblers are most likely addicted to online gambling. Heung-PyoLee, Paul KyumanChae, Hong-Seock Lee, Yong-Ku Kim( 2007) states that being addicted to gambling is a serious social issue, but the underlying motivations are poorly understood. The five factors that motivate gambling (socialization, amusement, avoidance, excitement, and monetary motives) were derived from study data obtained from 240
  11. 11. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 11 college students. The structure of the five-factor model was confirmed by factor analysis of responses from 234 frequent gamblers. We then compared the “monetary motive version” of this model with the “parallel version” to determine which model more accurately describes how the five factors influence gambling. The monetary motive model holds that amusement, excitement, and avoidance motives influence gambling severity only through mediation of the monetary motive. The parallel model proposes that the five motives all independently influence gambling severity. We found that the avoidance and excitement motives did not have direct effects on gambling severity, but the monetary motive showed a direct positive influence. Thus the monetary motive model was more effective than the parallel model in explaining the influence of specific gambling motives on gambling severity. These findings may help in the improvement of therapy for pathological gambling. To date, there has been very little empirical research examining why people gamble online or—just as importantly—why they do not gamble online. Abby McCormack and Mark D. Griffiths, (2010) stated that a grounded theory study examining the motivating and inhibiting factors in online gambling was carried out. The sample comprised 15 online gamblers, 14 offline gamblers, and 11 non-gamblers, and resulted in the identification of one major theme as to why participants were motivated to gamble online (i.e., greater opportunity to gamble) and four sub-themes (i.e., convenience, value for money, the greater variety of games, and anonymity). The main reason that inhibited online gambling was that the authenticity of gambling was reduced
  12. 12. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 12 when gambling online. Four further sub-themes were identified as inhibitors of online gambling (i.e., the reduced realism, the asocial nature of the internet, the use of electronic money, and concerns about the safety of online gambling websites). Results also indicated that the participants’ perception was that online gambling was more addictive than offline gambling and that online gambling would exacerbate gambling problems in society. Economic motives. Some researchers have advocated that the major reason for gambling was to become wealthy. For example, Walker (1992) claimed that gambling is a behavior motivated by purely economic reasons. Aasved (2003) agreed with him by pointing out the human desire to acquire something from nothing present in gambling activity. Others argued that monetary gain is not the only motivation, because other factors such as excitement and challenge also play important roles in gambling activity (DIA, 2004). Nevertheless, most researchers have agreed that financial gain is a crucial factor impacting all gambling activities (Blaszczynski & Nower, 2002). Social motives. Although the opportunity to win makes gambling attractive, many also admitted that another motivation to gamble is social (Griffiths, 1995; Walker, 1992). This is especially true in card games that require human interaction (Aasved, 2003; Rogers, 1998). Some gamblers like to be accompanied by other players and have a crowd surrounding them, and others indicated that gambling is an opportunity to interact with friends and family (Browne & Browne, 1994).
  13. 13. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 13 Psychological motives. The link between gambling and psychological needs such as relieving anxiety and escaping from stress has been revealed; it was particularly highlighted in studies about problem gambling (Clarke, 2004; Raylu & Oei, 2002). Research has found that psychological needs as motivation factors were less common among non-problem-gambler samples and were dramatically more common among problem gamblers (Clarke et al., 2007). This finding confirmed previous conclusions that stress, anxiety, and depression contribute to the development of gambling involvement (Blaszczynski, McConaghy, & Frankova, 1991; Friedland, Keinan, & Regev, 1992; Henry, 1996; Raylu & Oei, 2004c). For instance, Coman et al., (1997) revealed that as much as 75% of gamblers who sought pathological gambling treatment suffered from depression. Blaszczynski et al. (1991) also showed that those who sought treatment and recovered from problem gambling also had a noticeable reduction in stress and anxiety (Coman et al., 1997; Friedland et al., 1992). (Psychologist Dr. Randy Dellosa 2022) mentioned that sabong is very culturally condoned and tolerated in the Philippines. It can be addictive is because of the culture and festivity. You’re not only going there to bet. There’s a whole culture and environment you are addicted to. Your friends are there; you’re addicted to the noise. Dellosa also attributes the addiction to e-sabong to its accessibility, as people are now betting online, resulting in higher debts and stakes. It’s easier to get the money and play. It’s very convenient too, because you don’t have to travel [to the actual
  14. 14. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 14 cockfighting pits, he added. Recently, a mother went viral on social media after appealing to the “buyers” of her daughter to return her child. She sold her own child to pay her debts out of her addiction to e-sabong. She sold her child for P45,000, but could not contact the buyer anymore when she changed her mind. Dellosa noted that as their debts grow, they become desperate to pay off their debts. They also become involved in high-stakes gambling. There's an urgency to find money through any means. They've lost much, so now they want to earn more from gambling. Other factors that may lead to e-sabong addiction include role-modeling, especially when a person has family members or relatives who are also addicted to cockfighting. Personal Experiences and Encounters in Joining Online Sabong The importance of sabong has been clearly recognized throughout academic journals and books Bankoff (1991) provided a historical perspective. Cockfighting was viewed as a sort of gambling that had infiltrated the fabric of Philippine society during colonial times. He elaborated. How it grew in popularity, especially among Tagalogs, and how it became a driving force towards the development of a taste for other forms of gambling In Lansang (1966) expressed his fascinating characterization of sabong. The close bond that exists between a Filipino cocker and his game fowl emphasizing how
  15. 15. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 15 the latter is always given preferential treatment to its struggle and as a metaphor for a relationship, as Geertz describes it (2016) referred to as'deep play.' Alabanza, Gonzaga, and Obligacion (1979) also conducted a qualitative investigation of the characteristics and experiences of kristo's or cockpit's bet-takers. They discovered that the job of a kristo necessitates competencies that can only be acquired through hands-on experience and ongoing instruction in mathematics and memorizing. (Wong 2010) described the behaviors involved in a cockfight in Cagayan Valley in his ethnographic study, indicating how the game mirrored a clan fight and how it might be utilized to resolve interpersonal disputes. While there have been some intriguing and scholarly studies of sabong as a cultural phenomena, there is still a need to investigate it as a kind of gambling that has a significant impact on the lives and behaviors of young people. Furthermore, studies have already been undertaken in other countries to fill a specific vacuum in the research about persons who gamble later in age (Nixon et al. 2005, Botzet 2005). This study qualitatively studied the lives and experiences of old people who actively participated in gambling, notably cockfighting, in light of this vacuum in Filipino gambling research. This research looked into causes for cockfighting, ways to make money from it, the amount of money wagered on the game, and the impact of cockfighting on a cocker's connection with his family.
  16. 16. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 16 Mr. Ang, whose e-sabong company, Lucky 8 Star Quest Inc., was one of the suspected online sabong companies possibly responsible for the'sabungeros' disappearances, said that his e-sabong company makes roughly P3 billion in commissions per month. He was invited to testify in a Senate hearing about the matter, and he revealed that they are collecting up to P2 billion in bets per day, or over P60 billion per month. It's a whopping P60 billion a month coming in, but the actual earnings, he claims, are only 5%, which is still a sizable sum of P3 billion every month. He claims, however, that the P3 billion does not go to his coffers, but rather to their agents, with the remaining 1% of commissions going to the firm's bills. After subtracting all of those costs, he is left with roughly P900 million. Every employee's dream is to earn P1 million each month, but 900 times that is out of this world. And it appears that we are not alone in our shock, since this revelation has prompted Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon to propose raising the taxes collected from these businesses. "Uulitin ko naman, P3 billion every month, even supposing you incur expenses on this, PAGCOR's earnings of P640 million per month is a pittance, is very modest compared to Lucky 8's total income." - Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon.

  20. 20. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 20 Chapter 3 Research Methodology This chapter explains the research approach that will be used in this study. It explains the research methods used to choose the study sample as well as gather and analyze data. It also gives an outline of the research area, which is Tandag, Surigao del Sur, as well as the people involved in Online Sabong Gamblers. Research Design A qualitative research design will be used for this study. We will gather information by conducting interviews, taking notes, and making careful observations. In this study, online sabongero gamblers will be asked where they get their money from when they play online sabong or e-sabong. This study is a phenological study where we explore what people experienced and focuses on their experiences of a phenomena.
  21. 21. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 21 Research Locale This research will be carried out in Barangay Quezon, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur. The researchers choose this location because there are some elderly men in this area who are involved in online sabong. Barangay Quezon is also a place where most people own or have chicken, specifically rooster for cockfighting. Quezon is located outside of the city proper, making it ideal for cockfight betters to raise and condition their chickens. The location of implementation is chosen by the researchers because it will provide the researchers with the necessary information needed to successfully complete the study. Figure 1.
  22. 22. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 22 Research Participants The research sample will be composed of five Online Sabong gamblers who are male of legal age from Barangay Quezon, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur. These participants are noted to be previously addict in live cockfight betting which lead them to involve in Online Sabong during the pandemic wherein social gatherings were prohibited. Sampling Design In Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, we will first identify individuals who are interested in the Out of temptation to addiction: a phenomenological study of online sabong gamblers research subject. Purposive sampling will elicit a favorable response from online sabong addicts. Purposive sampling was chosen for this study to allow us researchers to focus on specific characteristics of a population that are of interest, allowing us to best answer our research questions. This sampling will concentrate on those involved with online sabong or e-sabong, who are addicted gamblers of this game. Data Gathering Procedure Permission. To begin the study, we will obtain a consent of approval from the principal of Tandag National Science High School as well as the school's personnel. The research adviser will soon be asked permission as well, folloed by the captain of the barangay Quezon, Tandag City. The letter will be provided to the Online Sabong
  23. 23. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 23 Gamblers participants once it had been approved, and it will be followed by an explanation of why this research is being conducted. In the course of this study, we will then ask the selected participants to sign a permission letter. Fieldwork. We will go to the participant’s residence. Following that, we will conduct an interview/survey. In-depth Interviews. This form of interview is designed to delve into the respondent's perceptions and accounts in greater depth. This method is used on topics for which little is known and where it is important to gain in-depth understanding. The goal of this interview is to look at online gamblers' addictions with a reasonable approach. In addition to the observation, interviews were done simultaneously. The interviews were recorded on camera. Observations. While gathering data and information, observations are essential. Direct observations are essential during data collection to obtain a complete and well - ordered data set. Online Sabong Gambler participants were monitored throughout interviews and questionnaires. Data Analysis The data will be analyzed using thematic analysis. This form of analysis examines all of the data to uncover recurring issues and significant themes that synthesize all of the collected perspectives.
  24. 24. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TANDAG NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL Tabon-tabon, Quezon, Tandag City Humanities and Social Sciences Strand 24 In order to generate findings that transform raw data into new knowledge, a qualitative researcher must engage in active and demanding analytic processes throughout all phases of the research. Understanding these processes is therefore an important aspect not only of doing qualitative research, but also of reading, understanding, and interpreting it. Ethical Considerations. This study will be guided by the ethical consideration of research with human participants set out by the researchers. The researchers will approach the adviser and will be concerned in explaining the criteria and purpose of the study in conducting all research activities. Taking video, audio, and pictures and the convenience of the participants are considered. Moreover, participants have the right to withdraw from the study at any stage if they wish to do so. The privacy of the research participants has to be ensured and shall be confidential. Offensive, discriminatory, or other unacceptable language needs to be avoided in the interview. Privacy and anonymity of the participant are of paramount importance. Any type of misleading information, as well as representation of primary data findings in a biased way, must be avoided. Acknowledgment of works of other authors used in any part of the dissertation with the use of APA format.
