OBJECTIVES
• explain what evaluation means;
• demonstrate how evaluation can be used to improve
mathematics instruction;
• describe the various mathematical learning levels;
• describe various mathematical evaluation methods.
• illustrate various evaluation-related questions.
INTRODUCTION
Most people think of "evaluation" as some kind of
assessment that means figuring out how much something
is worth. When the term "evaluation" is used in the context
of mathematics education, tests and grades may come to
mind first. However, that's not all. Evaluation
encompasses a lot more than just tests, which are just one
of many methods for evaluating student performance.

EVALUATION
Following assessment, evaluation looks at a
student's strengths, needs, and progress
toward achieving the learning outcomes.
The process of making judgments or
decisions based on the information
gathered during assessment is called
evaluation.
ROLE OF EVALUATION IN THE
MATHEMATICS CLASSROOM
Characteristics Of Evaluation in
Mathematics
5
 In the field of education, the term "evaluation" is
used quite frequently. It plays a crucial role in
the mathematics classroom.First, let's try to
comprehend what evaluation is.
 Some or all of the following activities may be
included in your responses:
 Give tests and examinations
 looking at schoolwork tasks, and a getting
sorted out a test program in mathematics
WHAT CONSTITUTES THE
QUALITY OF
MATHEMATICAL LEARNING?
Students of mathematics are expected to master facts,
develop concepts, use symbols, master processes and
procedures, develop generalizations, apply mathematical
concepts to real-world situations, and be able to reason
deductively, among other things. One student may achieve
high grades through rote memorization, while the other
has developed the ability to think critically and solve
problems.Who then learns more effectively?
Clearly, you are aware that you must plan your lessons
before teaching. When planning lessons, it's important to
think about both the material and the students who will be
learning it.There is a good chance that the students in
your class have a wide range of prior knowledge and
experience. They might also be learning at different levels
about the material you want to teach.

EVALUATION FOR LEARNING
ENHANCEMENT
Characteristics Of Evaluation in
Mathematics
7
An evaluation experience is also a learning opportunity
for the student. For instance, a student must
simultaneously think and perform operations while
taking a test. She typically experiences increased focus
and a sense of worry. As a result, responses to histher
tests are more likely to be remembered for a longer
period of time than those to a casual learning
experience.Students need to be well-prepared for their
tests if they want to keep good records. This practice
not only helps them learn a lot of what they've already
learned, but it also helps them learn some new
information.
TECHNIQUES
OF EVALUATION IN
MATHEMATICS
During curriculum planning, an evaluation
program for a mathematics course or unit must
be planned as an integral part of the
curriculum. To effect the desired changes, the
course or unit's objectives in terms of student
behavior and appropriate learning experiences
must first be stated.

Mathematics

TESTS
Characteristics Of Evaluation in
Mathematics
9
• We conduct a mathematics aptitude test to
determine a student's likelihood of success in a
course.
• We use pre-tests to measure students' prior
knowledge and experience to determine
whether or not they are ready to learn a new
unit.A prerequisite for new learning is the pre-
test.Surveys and inventories are other names
for these kinds of tests.
• During an instructional period, students use
self-adhinistering practice tests to assess their
own progress.
THE UNIT TEST
Characteristics Of Evaluation in
Mathematics
10
The construction of a unit test involves the
following steps:
• Planning the test,
• Item writing for the test,
• Assembling, administering and scoring the
test,
BUILDING TEST
ITEMS
For constructing test items you will need to
decide first what type of items to prepare. For
this you will primarily be governed by the kind
of student behaviour that is specified in the
objectives. Let us turn to the aforementioned
table of specifications. For demonstrating the
achievement of the objectives of knowledge,
understanding and application,
SETTING UP A UNIT TEST
While planning a unit test you will need to
make decisions about the following:
 objectives ofthe unit,'
 number of items in the test,
 type of items to be constructed
