1. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP): A poisoned gift or the
panacea for the predicaments faced by the European Union and the United States of
America?
ABSTRACT
In recent years the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) has received a
considerable amount of attention both in the press and in the academic sphere. The highly
controversial nature of the EU-USA trade deal has made it an inevitable topic of
discussion. Scholars and journalists have expressed their views on the matter and their
opinions are mixed; some argue that TTIP is a threat to the world while others are of the
opinion that the trade deal is a blessing that was long overdue.
This dissertation aims to explore the various ways in which TTIP will impact the
European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA). The first section gives an
overview of TTIP and sets the background of the research. Section two reviews germane
publications in relation to TTIP. The third section assesses the impact of TTIP on the EU
and the USA, especially in relation to the proposed regulatory cooperation chapter, the
investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism proposed in TTIP as well as the
proposed public procurement provisions. Section four assesses the impact of TTIP on the
international trading system and developing countries, and finally a set of
recommendations aiming at improving both the negotiation process and the agreement
itself are proposed along with an appropriate conclusion.
