Dreams without action never see the light of day. Envision, Part Two of the CloudFactory Perseverance Series, is all about making a plan to help us dream with open eyes.
Facilitator Notes: Read the title, subtitle, then go to next slide
Open Discussion (15 Minutes) - Begin with three questions:
How did everyone do with the 7-day challenge?
Did anyone complete the challenge every day? AND TELL THEM TO BE HONEST! No one is going to be in trouble if they failed.
Were there any specific challenges that people enjoyed above the others? If so, why?
Activity Introduction:
Today, we’re going to take some time to envision new possibilities and build a plan to see those possibilities come true. We’re going to do this in four steps, using a sheet of paper, our imagination, and a little bit of math.
Facilitator Notes: NEXT SLIDE
Step One (5-10 Minutes)
Many who have persevered said one thing was crucial to their success: their imagination! They would often imagine themselves having succeeded. So first, let’s take a little time to imagine ourselves in a moment of triumph. And we’re not going to think too far out in the future. Think about something you really wish you could do in the next 2 months. Where are you? What are you doing? To stir the pot of ideas, think back to your dreams you discussed as a team last meeting. Or, think about the 7-day challenge. Were any specific challenges more enjoyable than the others? This is going to be your big goal, the thing you want to persevere for. It should be something that is completely doable, but also ambitious to some degree. Then, describe that scene in one or two short statements. You could write a sentence like “I am trekking Langtang” or “I am sharing the first draft of my first novel with my friends”. Now, take 5-10 minutes to write out your goals.
Facilitator Notes: Don’t have the CWs share their sentences when they are done, even if they want to. That will come later. Just move on to the next slide once they are finished.
Step Two
Next, we’re going to draw our scenes out! It doesn’t have to be a masterful work of art, but it should capture what you imagined as best as possible. For example:
Notes: Share the following two slides as an example.
Example:
You are trekking Langtang
Example:
You are sharing your first draft
Step Two - CONTINUED (10 Minutes)
Now, summon that imagination again and take 10 minutes to draw your scene.
Facilitator Notes: Give them 10 minutes to complete their drawings. Make sure you keep track of time so the meeting doesn’t go too long.
Sharing (5 Minutes)
Next, let’s go around the room and share our pictures with the team. Tell us briefly why you dream about yourself doing that thing.
Step Three (10 minutes)
Now, it’s time to break our pictures down! Take turns going around the group again and help each other identify the following: 1) the most basic things that are happening in each scene 2) what needs to happen to accomplish that goal 3) how much of it is needed to succeed. So, for those of you who like grammar, this will usually look like a verb, followed by a number, followed by a noun. We’re going to call this our Vision Statement. For example...
Facilitator Notes: Share the following two slides as an example.
I am walking 45 KMs.
I am sharing the first draft of my novel, which required writing 180 pages.
Step Three - CONTINUED (10 Minutes)
Spend 10 minutes taking turns looking at everyone’s picture and help identify these three things.
Notes: Share the following two slides as an example.
Now, it’s time to quickly use a little bit of math to make a simple plan! First...
Divide the total number of what was needed in your vision statement by 45. That’s the number of days we’re going to prepare for our big challenge. So, if you’re dividing 45 KMs by 45 days, that equals 1 KM. If you are dividing 180 pages by 45 days, that equals 4 Pages. Next...
Multiple your number by 1.5. We do this to push ourselves beyond the minimum that is needed and set ourselves up better for success. So 1 KM becomes 1.5 while 4 pages becomes 6 pages.
Finally, let’s replace the big number in our vision statement with our new number and make a simple plan! For example...
Facilitator Notes: Share the following two slides as an example.
There you have it! A simple plan setting yourself up for success!
But there’s one more thing....
We know this might all seem like a lot. Maybe you’re thinking it’s too much. That’s normal! The most rewarding things in life take a lot. That’s true for everyone, whether you are the CEO or CloudWorker. Perseverance is less about success and more about not giving up! And CloudFactory wants to celebrate with those of you who do not give up. Here’s what we’re going to do. Take a photo with your team. Make sure each of you are holding up the sheet of paper with your vision statement and drawing. Then, send us a link in the form to that team photo. In about 2 months, we’re going to hold a competition. The 3 teams from each country that best embody the concept of perseverance are going to be rewarded with a special prize. For now, there are only 2 instructions: 1) Hang onto your drawing, and 2) go and persevere!
