The History of Perfume

Many people are aware of the intoxicating aroma
that comes from a favorite perfume. But, who
was the first to apply perfume? For as long as
written history has existed, so has perfume. As
there are hieroglyphics depicting ancient
Egyptians crafting scented liquids on the walls

The word perfume comes
from a Latin word meaning
"through smoke." Many of
the first perfumes were in the
form of incense that was used
in various religious
ceremonies. Many Egyptian
sects required that adherents
adorn themselves with
perfume at least once per
week.

The earliest perfumes bore little resemblance to
today's light mists of fragrance. Without the
technology involved in alcohol distillation, scents
were usually found in two forms. Dry incense that
was burned in the home or during religious rites,
and perfumes that was applied directly to the

essential oils, were then stored
in decorative vases or even
buckets. This was because the
fragrance was carried by fats
and resins, which were then
melted or softened before
applying. Because the perfume
was carried by oil and fat, it
made a wonderful moisturizer.

Grecian and Roman Empires, the use of perfume
spread between the cultures. Perfume became a
much sought after trade item, and every wealthy
Greek and Roman household had an assortment
of imported Egyptian perfumes on hand.

revolutionized perfumery as well. A still
allowed the perfume creator to more easily
extract the smells from flowers and other
