THE MISSION
BEHIND
THE MUSIC
6. It began with a promise made by a father to his dying son. Music industry executive Tony Martell created the foundation
in 1975 in honor of his son T.J. Martell. Before T.J. lost his battle with Leukemia at the very young age of 19, he asked his
father to raise one million dollars for research so that “no one else would have to experience what I am going through.”
Although he had no fundraising experience, Tony agreed. Soon after, Tony was joined by many of his friends in the music
industry, including Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, and the great Duke Ellington. They held their first fundraiser at Buddy
Rich’s nightclub in New York and raised $50,000! The T.J. Martell Foundation was born that night. Over the years, the T.J.
Martell Foundation has kept its roots firmly planted in the music industry. Hundreds of volunteers across the country have
used their time and talent to help the Foundation raise more than $270 million for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research.

7. THE RESEARCH The essence of Martell funding includes four central
core principles:
> First and foremost, great science improving and progressing
year on year
> Nurturing the next generation of basic, translational and
clinical scientists
> Supporting high-risk, high-gain research wherein seed funding
can establish proof-of-concept to compete for larger NIH grants
> Encouraging collaborations between the funded centers
Our funding has been leveraged to
produce over one billion dollars in
additional research grants.
