1. GALLERIES ON STAGE CALENDAR
Jim Shaw, Not Since Superman Died (detail), 2015
It's Super, Man (on view now)
Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe critic Sebastian Smee calls our Entertaining Doubts,
the largest-ever U.S. show of California-based artist Jim Shaw's work, a "knock-out," and
"the show of the summer." The exhibition spans two floors and includes over 115 works.
Since you might not be able to get here today, we put together a virtual gallery walk of this
fantastic exhibition. Click to take a stroll through Entertaining Doubts; then come visit us
for your own gallery walk soon.

2. Clifford Ross, Mountain IV, 2004
Worth a thousand words
May 23 kicks off a year of photography at MASS MoCA, and our exhibiting artists make
stunningly beautiful and disparate work. Boundary-pushing photographer Clifford
Ross' Landscape Seen & Imagined spans two buildings, six galleries, and an exterior
performing arts courtyard. The centerpiece of his expansive exhibition is a 90-foot long
photograph of Mt. Sopris in Colorado, printed on raw wood. The resolution of Ross' works
is so rich, you'll want to pick a leaf off a tree.
Also on view is photographer-without-a-camera Liz Deschenes' Gallery 4.1.1, featuring
new work that draws from sculpture and architecture as much as it does
photography. Displayed in free-standing frames, Deschenes' seductive blue
prints constantly change in response to the natural light that floods our first-floor galleries.
While she's here, Deschenes will also co-curate Artists' Choice: An Expanded Field of
Photography, featuring work by six artists — Dana Hoey, Craig Kalpakjian, Miranda
Lichtenstein, Josh Tonsfeldt, Sara VanDerBeek, and Randy West — whose
photographically grounded works expand into realms of video, painting, and sculpture.
All three exhibitions open on May 23.

3. Francesco Clemente, Standing With Truth Tent (exterior view), 2013
Bursts of Color
Later, in June, Francesco Clemente's Encampment, an erotic, nomadic collection of tents
and lush watercolor paintings, fills up MASS MoCA's largest gallery. Seattle artist
collective SuttonBeresCuller's Big Top Grand Stand kicks off the Solid Sound festival
with a circus-themed work that truly "pops" (and remains on view through September).
Kidspace begins a four-year examination of empathy's role in problem-solving with a
group show entitled Walk in My Shoes. MASS MoCA favorite Ran Hwang keeps us on
pins and needles (and buttons) when she tranforms our Hunter mezzanine with
Untethered. And in July, look for Williamstown-based Barbara Takenaga translating a
new painting from her Nebraska series onto a 100' gallery wall adjacent to the museum
lobby.
