Born and brought up in a poor but close-knit working class area of Liverpool (Anfield), one of five children. Life in Anfield became much harder after my father died when I was 12yrs old and he was 46yrs. This hardship provided first hand experience of poverty and family struggle.
Disengaged at school I left aged 17 and started clerical work in 1974 at Liverpool Social Services. Through employment and day release study began my interest in professional and academic study. After completing my ONC & Cert. PA I went full time to Liverpool University and qualified as a social worker.
