Mr. Briggs is a 40-year-old deputy principal who enjoys organization and order. He has a strict and serious personality. While he initially believes he can change the misbehaved children in the Progress Class, he comes to understand they are from poor families and it is too late to properly educate them. After connecting with Carol and seeing her enjoyment at the funfair, Mr. Briggs begins to soften in his approach, though he ultimately returns to destroying photos that show his softer side.
4. Mr.Briggs likes everything to be organised.
He shows that in some parts of the book, like
when he tries to get the children in single
file, when the children were just going to the
shop or when he sings a song called
“Instructions on Enjoyment “.
5. Mr.Briggs is the opposite of Ms.Kay.Ms.Kay is
a loving and caring person. She is like a mother
to the children in the Progress Class.
As for Mr.Briggs,he is more of a old school
teacher. He likes everything to be as he what’s
it to be and he doesn’t like children.
6. At first when he meet the Progress Class
he knew its a bunch of misbehaved
children and he thought that he can change
them ,but he was wrong. He can’t do that
because they are from poor families. He
understood that when he talked to Carol on
the cliff.
7. Carol and Ms.Kay made him understand that
it’s too late for the children from the
Progress Class to get them educated and for
them to get a good job and he feels sorry for
poor Carol.
So to make Carol happy,he tells Ms.Kay that
they should go to the funfair.

9. At the Funfair not only Carol had fun
,Mr.Briggs also. For the first time in
his life he felt truly happy, but at the
end of the trip when Ms.Kay shows
him the photos of him he comes
back to his usual self and destroys
the photos.
