FT iPhone studio pops up in San Francisco
created by Veronica Kan-Dapaah in FT Editorial - View the full blog postFT editorial has been putting the iPhone 5 through its paces as a news gathering tool for the the past nine months. In the beginning we went softly, handing out five, then 10, and eventually 15 of Apple's popular smartphones to correspondents around the world. We asked writers to use them to gather simple shots: land and cityscapes, soundbites and the odd sequence with a view to creating quick video blogs.
It wasn't long before the video team started using them for more complicated shoots, upping production quality to values not far off what would be expected from a professional camera. Josh de la Mare's guide to cooking a lobster in a wheelbarrow http://video.ft.com/2516295531001/How-to-cook-a-lobster-in-a-wheelbarrow/Life-An d-Artsremains one of the most impressive examples I've seen of both iphoneography (yes that is a thing, it even has a Wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhoneography) and culinary adventurism.
The writers are catching up quickly: Tim Bradshaw http://video.ft.com/3037340443001/Virtual-reality-in-the-unreal-city/Companies; Henry Mance http://video.ft.com/3271145081001/Battle-of-the-Broadcasters/Companies; Sarah O'Connor http://video.ft.com/3237213247001/Foreign-buyers-sold-on-Bolton/Companies; Hannah Kuchlerhttp://video.ft.com/3230230522001/Tech-groups-find-secret-of-success/Companies
and Katrina Manson http://video.ft.com/3269850528001/Kenya-s-beauty-sector-blossoms/Companies. They are among the contenders to beat video journalists at our own game.

In February, we raised our ambitions again and Steve Ager travelled to the San-Francisco office to create an iPhone pop-up studio.
The concept was to provide a space where interviews can be recorded on video cheaply and simply. Despite the temporary feel, the studio is designed to be left in place for as long as possible. The positions for chairs, lights and tripods have been marked on the floor with gaffer tape. Any FT journalist in the office is now able to record a piece to camera or a two camera interview quickly and easily with minimal training.

Techsplainers and Meet the Journalists: best projects happen when everybody is working together
Started with a bake-off process to decide what we want for the Next FT
Over two days in July teams from the FT joined forces with the likes of MIT Media Lab, the BBC, British Library and several creative agencies to tackle the challenges presented by the next generation of readers. We've condensed all this into five minutes for your viewing pleasure.
Ideas are now in prototype – again breaking with tradition and doing a rapid fire prototyping process – atomised news, articles, navigation etc
Not only on tech side, but with all projects. Putting the customer first
