LESSON 16:
THE INTERNET
AND
EDUCATION
What is Internet??
The internet is the largest
and far-flung network
system of all systems.
 Surprisingly, the internet
is not really a network but
a loosely organized
collection of about 25,000
networks accessed by
computer on the planet.
 The Internet, shortly termed “net” has
become an important part of education
as a whole (from administrative to
actual teaching and learning process).
The Internet is a network system of many
systems. It is not a network, rather, a
collection of networks across the globe from
which computers access. It does not have an
owner, no central office and it does not tell
users information of what is available in the
system – the user searches it.

It does not have an
owner, no central
office and it does not
tell users information
of what is available in
the system – the user
searches it.
How is everything
coordinated through
the internet?
Through a standardized protocol
everything is coordinated through the
internet called TRANSMISSION CONTROL
PROTOCOL/INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP).
(Set of rules for exchanging data)
To gain access to the internet, the
computer must be equipped with what is
called as Server which has a special
software ( program) that uses the Internet
protocol.
Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School
The internet connect not only
commercial, industrial,
scientific establishments but
all other sectors including
education and its libraries,
campuses and computer
centers.
GETTING AROUND THE NET
 Vast amount of
information can be
accessed in the Internet,
both old and up-to-date
information.
 Including news and trivia,
is an overwhelming
challenge to those who
wish to navigate it.
The Net-user population
and the available
information continue to
grow, and new ways are
continuously being develop
to tour the internet.
Browsing
The most attractive way to
move around the internet.
 Browsing
The most attractive way
to move around the
internet.
Browser
A program that user can use a
mouse to point and click on screen
icons to surf the internet,
particularly the World Wide Web,
an internet’s subset of text,
images, and sound are linked
together to allow users to access
data or information needed.
The future of the internet seems
limitless. Many experts predict
that the Internet is destined to
become the centerpiece of all
communications on the planet.
A View of Educational Uses of
The Internet
Educational software materials have
also developed both in sophistication
and appeal.
There is now a wider
choice from rote
arithmetic or grammar
lessons to discovery
and innovation
projects.
And today schools are
gearing up to take advantage of
internet access, where they can
plug into the library of
congress, make virtual visits to
famous museums in the world,
write to celebrities, and even
send questions to heads
states.
We are still in
the very
beginnings of
the internet.
Let’s use it
wisely.
Jimmy Wajes
Activity
1. Get a quick tutorial on internet basis from the “surf
school” at
http://www.znet.com/vil/content/surfschool/howto/ho
wtotoc.html
2. Create a class sharing on their experience with the
‘Surf School’
Practical exercises
Allot time for each of these exercise, requiring students
to make/share reports.
1. Visit and explore so-called engines of the internet,
locating one subject to each student/group.
Download files from a webpage; print a webpage
capturing texts and photos.
2. Access teacher sites, and report to the class about
the lesson plans and other teaching ideas.
