1. Turning:
To produce straight, conical, curved, or grooved work pieces,
such as shafts, spindles, and pins.
2. Facing:
To produce a flat surface at the end of the part and
perpendicular to its axis useful for parts that are assembled
with other components. Face grooving produces grooves for
applications such as O-ring seats.
3. Cutting with form tools:
To produce various axisymmetric shapes for functional or
aesthetic purposes.
4. Boring:
To enlarge a hole or cylindrical cavity made by a previous
process or to produce circular internal grooves.
5. 5. Drilling:
To produce a hole, which may be followed by boring to
improve its dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
6. Parting:
It is also called cutting off, to cut a piece from the end of a
part, as is done in the production of slugs or blanks for
additional processing into discrete products.
7. Threading:
To produce external or internal threads.
8. Knurling:
To produce a regularly shaped roughness on cylindrical
surfaces, as in making knobs and handles.

9. Grooving:
Grooving is the process of cutting a narrow groove on the cylindrical
surface of the work piece.
10. Chamfering:
Chamfering is the operation of beveling the extreme end of the work piece.
The form tool used for taper turning may be used for this purpose.
11. Eccentric turning:
If a cylindrical work piece has two separate axes of rotating, one being out
of centre to the other, the work piece is termed as eccentric and turning of
different surfaces of the work piece is known as eccentric turning.
12. Thread cutting:
The process of thread cutting is to produce a helical groove on a cylindrical
surface by feeding the tool longitudinally.
13. Forming:
Forming is a process of turning a convex, concave or any irregular shape.
For turning a small length formed surface, a forming tool having cutting
edges conforming to the shape required is fed straight into the work.
