Target Audience Research Conclusions – Questionnaires

The majority of the fan base were aged 31-45, which would correlate with the idea that fans
have grown up around the music. This is because the original punk rock genre would have grown
in popularity when they were younger, and that they are still interested in it today. However, it
also shows that the genre still holds much credibility, as younger audiences are still being
attracted to it today.

The main audience for the genre seems to be male, which responds positively to the stereotype
of punk-rock connoting aggression and power, not something that would be typically associated
with females. However, the modernisation of the genre would explain why women are also
interested in it.

3. Hobbies

The hobbies were very varied but there was a main trend of listening to music, which supports
the stereotype that music in this genre is taken very seriously, and is a very big influence.
However, there is also a trend of video gaming with males and reading with females, which
would show that those with the same music interests share the same hobbies.

The biggest preferred genre is punk-rock and rock, but some of the results showed more than
one preferred genre. The most common combined preferences were rock with pop and R&B,
which was mostly common in the male audience; this is a very atypical result because the
stereotype shows that males also enjoy a more feminine-based genre.

5. Stereotypes of a punk rock music video

Violence and fighting was a very common theme with this answer, which supports the idea that
punk-rock is a very aggressive music genre. However, there was also a trend of colour, whether
it be in clothing or hair, and the idea of body art (piercings and tattoos), which correlates with
the idea of punk-rock wanting to be shocking or different.

The majority of people expected to see a mostly performance based video, which incorporated
humour or iconic images. This supports the stereotype of punk-rock being both serious and
slightly laidback (a slight contradiction), because it was done to be very ironic. Also there was a
distinct lack of narrative storylines, but this is an idea we might explore; introducing the genre to
a narrative storyline.
7. Features in an Album

Most people felt that the music, genre or artist was the most important thing about a CD or
album, and that they would purchase one based on these things primarily. This enforces the idea
that the music was most important in punk-rock. However, a small minority also felt that the
aesthetics of the album were important, such as the artwork or the additional features such as
bonus tracks. This shows that the punk-rock genre has modernised alongside other genres to try
to keep with the times.

8. Attraction to Artists/Bands

The answer to this question was unanimous; the music or the talent of the artist or band. This
heavily supports the connotation of ‘serious artists’, and shows that no matter what type of fan
you are (male, female, older or younger), the music is the main factor in an artist or band’s
popularity.

Like with the preferred genres, there was often an overlap in how people find out about new
music. However, the most common was radio, which signifies that the ‘older’ methods of
hearing music still shine through. This is also supported by the fact that there are more older
fans of the genre; also, the use of the internet was very slim, which also shows this.
10. All of the favourite bands show that rock bands were often associated with punk-rock, but
    there was also a wide variety of older and newer bands, regardless of age. This subverts the
    connotation that “old people like old bands”, and shows that the popularity of new rock
    bands has not wavered. It also shows that punk-rock and rock music can mature without
    going stale.

However, the most common was radio, which signifies that the ‘older’ methods of hearing music still shine through. This is also supported by the fact that there are more older fans of the genre; also, the use of the internet was very slim, which also shows this.

This subverts the connotation that “old people like old bands”, and shows that the popularity of new rock bands has not wavered.
