  2. 2. Sport and Recreation Industry The sport and recreation industry is divided into 4 sectors: - Sport - Fitness - Outdoor recreation - Community recreation
  3. 3. Sport and Recreation Industry 1. The sport sector  Sporting programs in Australia range from community sporting clubs and association to professional organisations.  Community clubs and associations make up a big proportion of the industry.  Department of sport and recreation (DSR) is the state government body responsible for governing sport in WA.  Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is federal government body that governs sport in Australia.  Local government (shires) work closely with clubs and associations.
  4. 4. Sport and Recreation Industry 1. The sport sector continued……………  Professional sport (AFL, NBL, NRL) generate significant money for sport through attendance and television rights.  There is a national and state sporting association for most sports in Australia .

The fitness sector  Fastest growing sector in the industry  Gymnasiums and health clubs can privately owned and run or run by local government such as at recreation centres  Big growth in small group fitness and personal training businesses  Fitness Australia is the governing body the fitness sector

The fitness sector continued………………  Significant overlap between sport and fitness industry as many fitness professionals work in sporting clubs, associations and program.  Many sporting clubs and associations have fitness programs operating from facilities.

Community recreation sector:  Community recreation Includes recreation and aquatic centres.  Aquatic / leisure centre industry is governed by Royal Life and LIWA.  Usually funded and managed by local government (shires).  Clubs and associations are key stakeholders to community recreation centres in most towns.  Department of sport and recreation (DSR) are also a governing body for community recreation facilities and programs.

Outdoor recreation sector  Includes outdoor recreation programs usually conducted in natural settings  Businesses are usually owned and run and include adventure activities, camping and tourism  Example of outdoor recreation activities in this sector include canoeing, hiking, rock climbing, horse riding and abseiling  Activities are usually non competitive  Governing body is Outdoor WA

Governing bodies in the sport, fitness and recreation industry  A governing body is an organisation that provides guidance and direction for specific activities, programs and businesses in the sport, fitness and recreation industry  Governing bodies provide: - Funding opportunities and grants - Guidelines for safe and ethical delivery of activities - Registration for clubs, associations, programs, business and professional - Insurance and protection for associated members - Accreditation and professional development  All sport, fitness and recreation facilities, programs and deliverers should follow guidelines set by governing body

Current trends in the sport, fitness and recreation industry according to CSIRO (ASC)  Individualised sport and fitness activities are on the rise.  People fitting sport / activity into busier lifestyles.  Big increase in aerobics, running, walking and gym memberships.  Participation in organised sports has declined.  Expenditure on healthcare has increased.  Increase in extreme sports due to increase exposure through YouTube, Facebook and viewing demand.  Benefits of sport and fitness are being increasingly recognised by governments, business and communities.  Used to achieve physical health, crime prevention, social developmen.t  Used to treat increasing rates of obesity and chronic illness.

Role of sport, fitness and recreation industry The sport, fitness and recreation industry plays a significant role in the community including:  Professional sport generates revenue (income) that is eventually spent on community programs and facilities.  Facilitates community development – sport can unite people from range of backgrounds including racial, cultural and religious.  Provided opportunity for volunteering and employment.  Used to engage at risk children and youth and divert from crime.  Facilitate heathy and activate lifestyles and communities.  Provides avenue for competition, pathways and representation.
