Despite recent growth of connected devices and
networked services, the lack of shared architecture
to interconnect––never mind authenticate or
monetize––distributed machines limits value and
business model success.
Distributed Ledger Technology’s (DLT) role as an
enabler of the Internet of Things (IoT) lies in its
ability forge trust, not only at the product level, but
across an ecosystem of untrusting constituents.

CarPass is an effort to centralize automotive identity
across distributed parties
Shared visibility into a trusted ledger benefits all parties. Governments can
better audit car safety and enforce environmental laws; consumers gain
transparency into the integrity of parts, wear and tear, and avoid lemons;
technicians can assess maintenance history and user interactions;
manufacturers and service centers can offer value-added data services such
as replacing parts before they wear out.

Given big data constraints, Factom uses hierarchical hashing to condense data
to a single hash, anchored on the Bitcoin blockchain. Factom serves as
middleware component for stream processing and hashing.

Beyond M2M communications, this presents significant cost savings compared
to current server and payment infrastructure. Transaction time reduced from
days to seconds, and fees from ~3% to .01%

Solarcoin all offer ways for individuals or commercial
solar farms to “tokenize” solar energy production

IoT Datalogger method connects to the blockchain, then sends production data to the corresponding user
account, then the affiliate site logs this and uses an API to get claims from the SolarCoin Foundation.

vehicle settings) and vehicle (e.g. maintenance records, diagnostics).

Shping offers a platform for consumers to scan barcodes
and upload photos in exchange for reward tokens.
A universally recognized product ID number allows all parties to see provenance,
interactions, certifications, warranties, and quickly react in the event of a recall

While an early prototype, the ADEPT (Autonomous Decentralized Peer-to-Peer
Telemetry) project remains a critical illustration of the IoT-DLT opportunity: using a
‘single ledger’ to track, reconcile, and securing interactions across diverse parties for
business model agility.

Note the rise of DLT as data exchange— a decentralized
medium for secure, compliant, scalable data marketplace
The Autonomous Vehicle Data Exchange (AVDEX) is a DLT-built data exchange
developed by Toyota Research Institute and BigChainDB in an effort to open up
data silos for autonomous car R&D. Data providers can upload data sets and data
consumers can search, buy, and rate data. Many non-industry-specific decentralized
data exchanges, like IOTA’s data marketplace, are also emerging.
