3. 1836 – INVENTION OF THE TELEGRAPH
The telegraph allowed
people to communicate
quickly over long
distances.
Prior to the telegraph
people had to rely on
letter which might take
weeks or even months
to get from on place to
another.

Alexander Graham Bell
introduced the first
telephone.
It required an operator
to connect the lines.

The Internet began as Advanced Research Projects
Agency Network (ARPANET)
The development was funded by the U.S.
Department of Defense.

7. 1971 – THE FIRST EMAIL IS SENT
The first email was
sent by Ray Tomlinson
from one computer to
the other.
Tomlinson was the first
to use the @ symbol.

became standardized.
Developers embraced open-source code that could
be shared to create a greater web of information.

Many search engines
came before
Google, but they
entered the Internet
with a great product.
From the
beginning, Google has
provided quick and
relevant search results.

search by key term. It
allows you to easily
search imagines, news
and shopping.
Google as has
developed several
web-based applications
– from Google Docs to
Web developer tools.

Facebook was started
as a school project in
2004.
The site was designed
as a directory for
college students.
Today more than 750
million people are on
Facebook. That’s more
than twice the
population of the U.S.

share videos.
