This route will take you into Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which boast of a long and glorious history, replete with huge empires,
great kings, spectacular architectural wonders, spell-binding art, ancient traditions thriving in tandem with modern technology.
This path begins in the cultural capital of south India and the capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai and heads to Mahabalipuram, the once vibrant
ancient Pallava port from the sixth century. From Mahabalipuram it takes a detour into the French colonial quarters of Pondicherry from
where it will emerge to find its way back in time to the 11th and 12th centuries in and around Thanjavur. The road then leads to the heart
of Chettinad in Karaikkudi and proceeds to the ancient Tamil capital and the heartland of Tamil culture, Madurai. From Madurai, the
journey will take you, to the serene tropical paradise in Periyar in the Western Ghats. It then emerges from the mountains in the historic
metropolis of Kochi from where it traces its way back into the legendary backwaters in Kumarakom and then on the pristine beaches
of Marari. From there it proceeds to the capital of the Wodeyar Dynasty of Maharajas in Mysore as it stops on the way at the tropical
paradise of Wayanad in northern Kerala. From Mysore the path leads to the sculptural extravaganza of the Hoysala Empire in Belur and
Halebidu via Chikkamagalur, famous for its coffee plantations. It then meanders its way back to the silicon valley of India, Bangalore,
where it ends.

Pallava era in the 7th Century CE.
Uncover the story of St. Thomas, one of
Jesus’s twelve disciplesis who are said to
have come to India in the first century and
buried at the site of San Tome Church. It
is one of only three basilicas built over the
tomb of an apostle.
Walk through the oldest colonial quarters
of Chennau, historically known as White
Town, Fort-St. George was the first fort
built in India by the British East India
Company. It withstood many attacks
before being briefly held by the French.
Take a scintillating artistic tour of the
Government State Museum. It is a grand
repository of the rich heritage of Indian
state of Tamil Nadu. The museum has an

A 7th century structural temple along the
Bay of Bengal. Recent excavations have
revealed new structures here. It offers some
spectacular views of the sea and is a sight to
behold during sunset and sunrise.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a
giant open-air bas relief depicting various
tales from Hindu mythology. It is a splendid
example of ancient sculpture. It is one
of the most well-known sculptures in
Mahabalipuram.
These five fascinating monolithic pyramidal
structures are named after the five princes,
the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi
from the ancient epic Mahabharata. An
interesting aspect of the rathas or ‘chariots’is
that, each of which is carved from one stone.
A small rock-cut temple dating back to the
7th century within the larger premises of the
other rock-cut sculptures and temples. The
relief carvings are certain to enchant you.

SEECITY OF TEMPLES
With its wealth of ancient architecture, collectively designated a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, Mahabalipuram was once a major seaport and the
capital of an ancient empire. This former glory is easily evoked whilst
wandering through the maze-like town past the incredible carvings and
temples all a-glow from the setting sun. Apart from the small settlement
that has grown around these ancient structures, time will otherwise seem
to have stopped in Mahabalipuram.

Walk along the knave of this mellow pink-
and-cream Notre Dame de Anges , built in
1858, looks sublime in the late-afternoon
light. The smooth limestone interior was
made using eggshells in the plaster.
Visit the serene spiritual environs of
Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926 by
Sri Aurobindo and a French-born woman
known as ‘the Mother’. This spiritual
community now has 1200 members who
work in the ashram’s departments, its
commercial sections and education centre.
As you walk the colonial quarters, walk
over to the Church of Our Lady of the
Immaculate Conception. Completed in
1791, it is reminder of a robin’s-egg-blue-
and-cloud-white typically Jesuit edifice in
Medieval Europe.
It is the most important Hindu temple in
Pondicherry. The temple is of considerable
antiquity and predates French occupation
of the territory. It is an interesting stop
after a colonial tour of the city.

SEEA FRENCH FASCINATION
The last remnant of the French colonial aspirations, Pondicherry has
retained its distinctness from the rest of Tamil Nadu. Known in the local
Tamil language as Puducherry meaning ‘New Town’, Pondicherry is a
small enclave stuck in a time warp. Its unique French character being in
harmony with the local Tamil culture is a marriage of civilizations unlike
any other.

Called the ‘Big Temple’, it is the crowning
glory of the Cholaempire and an epitome
of south Indian temple architecture and the
first of ‘The Great Living Chola Temples’.
Beautifully preserved, take your time
exploring this stone wonder.
Walk the labyrinth of buildings constructed
by the Nayaks of Madurai and which burst
with surprises. The palace also houses
a library which dates back to the late
17th century and is a repository of rare
manuscripts.
The second of ‘The Great Living Chola
Temples’. Built in the 12th century, it is
dedicated to Lord Shiva and is carved
exquisitely with images of the gods and
depicting several legends from the epics and
mythology.
The last of the ‘The Great Living Chola
Temples’. This temple is a storehouse of art
and architecture and has some exquisite
stone carvings. This is because this temple
is said to have been built with nitya-vinoda,
“perpetual entertainment”, in mind.

Legend says that a demon named Tanjan was killed by Lord Vishnu,
known locally as Neelamegha Perumal, in this town and ironically Thanjavur
was named after the vanquished and not the victor. History however has
been tremendously generous with Thanjavur. Its past splendor is evident
in the majesty of the thousand year old temples in and around the town.
Once the capital of one of the mightiest empires on in Indian subcontinent
and the cultural hot bed of south India, Thanjavur today is synonymous

rock-cut cave shrine dedicated to the
elephant headed Ganesha, located at
Thiruppatthur. The Agama texts found on
stones in the temple help date the temple
between the years 1091 and 1238 CE.

for its 18th century mansions, whose
wide courtyards and spacious rooms are
embellished with marble and teak. Walk

merchants that form the majority of the population, called Chettiars. The
town of Karaikkudi is dotted with wonderfully preserved colonial and

MADURAI

This interesting memorial museum
charts the history of the Indian fight for
independence from 1757 – 1947. It gets its
name from an artefact, the bloodstained
Dhoti or loincloth worn by Gandhi when
he was assassinated in 1948.
Marvel at the once grand palace built by
its namesake, ThirumalaiNayakar, one of
the most important Nayak rulers. Within
the dance hall are sculptures of lions and
makara alongside a series of murals further
adding to this allusion.
Stroll by the calm banks of the Mariamman
Teppakkulam tank, a vast tank 5 km east
of the old city. It covers an area almost
equal to that of Sri Meenakshi Temple and
is the site of the popular Teppam (Float)
Festival, held in January/February.
MEENAKSHI TEMPLE
The city’s crowning glory, dedicated to
the fish-eyed goddess Meenakshi Amman,
the Sri Menakshi temple is a six-hectare
labyrinth enclosed by 12 Gopurams or
towers all of which are ornately decorated
with a staggering array of sculptures.

One of India’s oldest cities, outliving the destruction of the Roman Empire,
Madurai is steeped in history and is the true soul of Tamil Nadu. Known
for the Sri Meenakshi Amman temple, a labyrinthine structure that ranks
among the greatest temples of India, Madurai also features many of the
dichotomies of the modern Indian city. In existence since the 4th century
BC according to Tamil and Greek documents, Madurai has been popular
for trade, especially in spices, and was also home of the Sangam – the
academy of Tamil Poets.

KOCHI

The Chinese fishing nets, Cheenavala, are
distinctly unique to Kochi. It is believed
that traders from the court of the Chinese
ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets
here. A whole stretch of the coast is dotted
with these nets.
A synagogue first stood on this spot in
1568, but was destroyed in 1662 by the
Portuguese and rebuilt when the Dutch
took Kochi. Around the synagogue is an
area known as ‘Jew Town’filled with spice
traders and curiosity shops.
Believed to be India’s oldest European built
church in 1503 by PortugeseFranscican
friars, the history of this Church reflects
the colonial struggle of European powers
in India from the 15th to 20th centuries.
MATTANCHERRY PALACE
Originally a generous gift from the
Portugese in 1555, the Mattancherry
Palace was presented the Raja Kochi,
Veera Kerala Varma, as a gesture of good
will. The Mattancherry Palace houses
astonishingly well preserved Hindu murals.

Spread over a series of islands and slender peninsulas isthe culturally
and historically rich port city of Kochi. An unlikely blend of medieval
Portugal, Holland and an English village grafted onto the tropical Malabar
Coast, Kochi is also a shining example of the diversity that is India. In the
conspicuously manifest cultural synthesis of Hindu, Christian, Islamic and
Jewish traditions, Kochi’s significance in Kerala’s history becomes evident.

Chamundi Hill is dedicated to Sri
Chamundeshwari, the deity of the Mysore
royal family. The temple dominates
the summit, standing at 40 meters with

Brindavan Gardens are located around

The opulent palace is a three storey granite

CHIKKAMAGALUR

The ornately carved Hoysaleswara Temple,
dedicated to Lord Shiva is just one of
the several temples in the village. For
the skill and artisanship displayed on it,
Hoysaleswara Temple deserves the acclaim
bestowed upon it.
The temple was constructed by Hoysala
King Veera Ballala II. The main deity is
Kedareshwara, a form of Lord Shiva and
the temple is unique in that it houses three
separate shrines under one roof hence
giving it the name Trikuta.
A journey to Halebidu is never complete
without stopping by the Jain Basadis.
Halebidu, apart being a repository of
Hindu art and sculpture, is also home to
quite a few Jain temples called Basadis
dating back to the Hoysala period and
some even earlier.
CHENNAKESAVA TEMPLE
Drive to Belur which was the cultural
center of the ancient Hoysala Empire.
The temple isdedicated to lord Vishnu.
Commissioned in 1116 by Vishnuvardhana,
there are certain areas of the temple where
the detail and imagination displayed is
unrivalled.

The town’s name ‘Chikkamagala Uru’ means ‘younger daughter’s town’
in Kannada, takes after the legend that the town was given in dowry for
Rukmangada, the daughter of the legendary head of Sakrepatna. Other
part of the town is called ‘Hiremagala Uru’ or ‘older daughter’s town’. The
town reputation lies in its scenic locations and its huge coffee plantations.
Short drive away are the hamlets of Belur and Halebidu, both synonymous
with ancient temples and their artistic splendour and sculptural
