  2. BRIEF BACKGROUND  Indonesia , officially the Republic of Indonesia, is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia is an archipelago comprising approximately 17,508 islands.  The nation's capital city is Jakarta.
  3. BRIEF BACKGROUND  The name Indonesia derives from the Latin and Greek Indus, and the Greek nèsos, meaning "island“.  Indonesia lies between latitudes 11°S and 6°N, and longitudes 95°E and 141°E.
  4. INTRODUCTION  The Indonesians belong to the Malay race but most of them are Muslims.  Although the Indonesians have embraced the Islam religion, they still pay tribute to the Hindu Gods of the epics in the Wayang Kulit.
  5. WAYANG KULIT  The Wayang is performed to mark important occasions, such as birth, a wedding, or circumcision.  Shadow puppet performance.
  6. WAYANG KULIT  The Wayang Kulit stories are mostly taken from a Hindu epic, Ramayana.  Tells the story of Rama whose wife Sita is abducted by the king of Sri Lanka, Ravana.  Thematically, the Ramayana explores human values and the concept of dharma.

PLACES  Bali is also in Indonesia but most of the people there are Hindu.  Ubod is a town known for having the most number of painters.  Rituals and feasts are important in the life of the Balinese.  They make flowers with high artistic value that are used for the decorations during fiestas.
  8.  Batik is one of the most enjoyable artistic creations of the Indonesians.  It is made by allowing wax to drift on the cloth to produce different designs. BATIK
  9.  Batik designs make use of horizontal and vertical geometric patterns, leaf and flower motifs, and birds and animal motifs.
  10.  Tie-dyeing is another technique in Indonesian textiles.  Borobudur is the oldest Buddhist monument in the world; built in 778 A.D.
  11. PEOPLE  Yohannes Christian John is an Indonesian professional boxer, and the current WBA (Super) featherweight champion.  John is the third Indonesian to win a boxing world title, following Ellyas Pical and Nico Thomas.
