2. Conditional 0
Clause Consequence clause
Formulation: If + present simple present simple
Concept: a fact, something that is always true.
Examples:
If you heat ice, it melts.
If demand for a product rises, its Price rises too.
It is easier to relax if you close your eyes.
Note: for conditinal 0, it is also possible to use “when”
instead of “if”, because it is not real conditional sentence.
Example:
When demand for a product rises, its Price rises too.
3. Conditional I
Clause Consequence clause
Formulation: If + present simple future simple (will do)
Concept: A present/future situation of high probability.
Note:
The probability is about the
probability of the action in the
“if” clause, not the other clause
(consequence clause)
Examples:
I see her quite often.
If I see her tomorrow, I will speak to her.
They are always late
I will not let them in if they are late again.
There can be some changes
If anything changes, we will let you know.
4. Clause Consequence clause
Conditional II
Formulation: If + Past Simple would do
Concept: 1.- A present/future situation of low probability.
2.- zero probability (a hypothesis).
Note:
The correct form of the
verb “to be” to use in
conditional 2 is “were”
for all pronouns. In
some cases “was” is
aceptable, but it is better
to keep it to “were” to
ensure you are always
correct.
Examples: A present/future situation of low
probability.
I don’t often see her.
If I saw her tomorrow, I would speak to her.
I don’t think anything will change.
If anything changed, we would let you know.
Examples: zero probability ( a hypothesis)
I don’t have any time this week.
If I had some time, I would tidy up my office.
If I were a lawyer, I wouldn’t take on this case.
5. Conditional III
Clause Consequence clause
Formulation: If + past perfect (had done) would have done
Concept: A past situation, too late, zero posibility
Examples:
I didn’t see her yesterday
If I had seen her, I would have spoken to her.
They weren’t late last night.
I wouldn’t have let them in if they had been late.
Nothing changed after you left.
If anything had changed, we would have let you know.
