2. •China’s music is considered as one of the
oldest music in the world.
•According to William P. Malms Music
Culture of the Pacific, the Near East, and
Asia, Chinese music was organized into
four periods.

3. 1.Formative Period (300BC-400AD)
2.International Period (401-959AD)
3.The National Period (10th-19th
century)
4.World Music Period (1950-
present)

4. FORMATIVE PERIOD
• Music was used in folk festivals to give
honor to ancestors. Stone chimes and
clay ocarinas are often used to
accompany this festival.

5. INTERNATIONAL PERIOD
• Marked as the climax of the development of the
Chinese music.
• At this time, the Chinese were no longer united and
their music was influenced by the Western and
Northern Borders.
• But when China began to reunite during Sui Dynasty,
court music, musical instruments were revived.

6. THE NATIONAL PERIOD
• Happened in the Sung Dynasty
• Vocal music was given emphasis during this
period and instrumental forms were also given
importance because they were used for vocal
accompaniment.
• Examples of musical instrument used during
this period includes the pipa and chin.

7. WORLD MUSIC PERIOD
•The traditional Western instruments
had a great influence on the birth of
a new kind of music in China.

9. •Most Chinese music is based on a five-
tone scale called the pentatonic scale.
•Other Chinese compositions are based
on the Lu system, which refers to the 12
pitches within the octave.
