senior services. It is located within Ryall
Park, has an attached library and its own
licenced daycare. Like most community
centres it is funded mainly through tax
revenue and user fees (Lunn, 2020)

Recreation
The community centre exist to “continually reinforce values and ideals of establishing and
maintaining a healthy lifestyle to the user” (Lunn, 2020, p.3). At a municipal level the
government has addressed the needs of the general public to provide affordable,
accessible and quality programs (Lunn, 2020). The community centre serves the direct
needs of the community in Queensborough and downtown New Westminster. It has a
multitude of services to offer thanks to its tax-based funding and can successfully be
developed and adapted to fit the needs of it community. It does this by offering a wide
variety of facilities, and services to be inclusive of all members of it’s community; and
adjusting its programs regularly to match the needs of the community seasonally (more
swimming in summer, more skating in the winter).
Coaching
There are some programs offered within the community centre for sport participation and
coaching opportunities. These can fall under volunteer coaches for the community centre’s
sport programs or private companies using the community centre’s resources for their
program.

This facility offers an array of services
that fall under the category of “public
good”. The facility is now owned and
operated by the municipality of New
Westminster but was previously done so
by the federal government (until 1973).
Since the pool is up to Olympic standard
it is funded mainly by the municipalities
of New Westminster and Burnaby and in
part federally (Parks & Rec, 2020). By
offering swimming lessons and fitness
facilities it helps the community to have
the means necessary to maintain and
promote healthy lifestyle (Lunn, 2020).

Recreation
Since “recreation is a fundamental human need … and is essential to a person’s physical and
social well-being and to overall quality of life”(Lunn, 2020, p.5) it is beneficial to have access to
a dual service facility like this one. It offers the public an affordable, and accessible options to
peruse their fitness and partake in recreation or leisure activities.
Coaching
This facility offers coaching opportunities for employment and for those to learn fundamental
skills. This includes swim team coaching, swimming lessons, aquafit, and varying fitness classes
(spin, bootcamp, etc.). By having these coaching element there can be an increased quality and
sense of community cohesion. They offer varying levels of activity to promote a progressive
movement environment. By having this it increases participation, enjoyment and thus acts as a
self motivator.

This facility offers a variety of services
that contribute to the “public good” of
the community. They have a variety of
services ranging from sports leagues,
arts and crafts, dance, aquatics and
skating. The sports plex has a focus on
sport participation and help to directly
address the recreation needs of the
public (Lunn, 2020). By having a facility
that offers numerous services it ensures
the municipality is taking responsibility
of ensuring the availability of a broad
range of recreation opportunities (Lunn,
2020).

Recreation
This facility offers a broad variety of recreation activities to participate in following suit
with the municipal responsibilities of recreation of providing enough opportunities for
“every individual and group consistent with available community resources and
needs” (Lunn, 2020, p.6). It is one of many facilities in New West that provides the
general public with their recreational needs.
Coaching
Unlike the common recreation centres in this community, the Sportsplex focuses more
on sport programs. This allows for increased coaching opportunities and organized
sport experiences for the public. A structured sport can help incorporate healthy
habits, increased social well-being, community (team/organization) cohesion and
overall enjoyment

many private events. It is funded through
its profits and membership fees. They
also operate with help from
advertisement partnerships to increase
their operating budget (Lunn, 2020).
Because it is part of the private sector it
is expected that the participants have a
high level of training, as this facility is
intended for experienced players to
practice. This in turn creates a high
quality and specialized experience for its
members (Lunn, 2020).

This organization’s services correspond with individual and collective interests of the
members (Lunn, 2020). Their aim is to have a specialized service where their rinks are
used mainly for the recreation and leisure of already experienced curlers. Due to the
nature of ice rinks and sheets, they have the opportunity to use advertisements of
sponsors and other companies to help their own funding (Lunn, 2020). In general, as a
private sector (member owned), it helps contribute to the creation of capital within
the community. As well, with it being a sport outside the ones typically offered at
community or recreation centres it increases the recreation opportunities for
residents (Lunn, 2020).

choose from, which also increases their

social demographics (Lunn, 2020). Also
they able to obtain funding through the
use of advertising and company
partnerships, typically shown throughout
the theatre and before the film (Lunn,
2020)

The theater offers an exclusive experience in exchange for revenue. This provides the
public with a less active and more laid-back mode of recreation differing from the
typical forms of physical recreation. This company and others provide recreation in
that they are able to entertain and feed their patrons. They are built for large capacity
to satisfy a large target market group and customer base. They do this though
showings of various genres of films, arcades, food, food courts and varying levels of
viewer experience (3D, IMAX etc.). As new technology emerges/improves the
recreation experience in the theatre will follow suite proportionally adding on to the
customer experience (i.e.. 4D movies at the Vancouver Aquarium).

Red Tiger martial arts has three locations
including this local one; Surrey and
Cloverdale. They are profit oriented in
that for a cost they provide you with a
service (teaching, competitions and
products). The facility operates off it’s
profits it gains from the public taking
part in it’s services. They provide quality
products and services while still
remaining competitive and affordable to
the general public (Lunn, 2020). The dojo
has professional and knowledgeable staff
to upkeep these standards of service.

Recreation
This fall under the commercial recreation service category of leisure, indoor
commercial recreation and clubs. The facility has the means to provide martial arts
instruction and gear in exchange for a cost, and those with increased interest can
invest more into the company to reap the benefits of the club and competitions.
These are all avenues the dojo can access to increase their revenue from the leisure
and recreation of the public.
Coaching
As an additional benefit the company has a standard of coaching not just the craft but
also moral and emotional ideals that centre around respect. This comes at no
additional cost as it is a part of martial art teachings and aid in overall well-being of
the individual. Coaching is also a factor for those with invested interest in the activity,
where they can work privately with instructors to reach varying physical and mental
feats.

This organization has the closest ties with
it’s community (Lunn, 2020) as it is funded
by ccombined fundraising efforts from
residents, grants, and contributions from
community-based businesses. They provide
a space for recreation, fitness, leisure,
conversation and most importantly act as a
safe place. It can serve “public good” in
that it gives youth learning, socialization
and movement opportunities alongside
their regularly scheduled events/programs
for youth outreach. The community itself
becomes a special interest group as they
have invested in advancing a specific area
of development (the lives of their children)
(Lunn, 2020).

Coaching
This facility and its program acts to help guide youth in social and physical situations
by presenting them with opportunities for personal growth. They are able to learn life
skills, social skills, and practice healthy physical and mental health. The people
responsible for this facility are able to support youth in these journeys and act as
mentors as they learn. The facilitators are able to act as a strong adult influence and
help create psychologically safe places for the youth. By having this space, recreation
and experiences they are able to grow and develop their potential despite their
economic status (Lunn, 2020).
Recreation
There are many forms of recreation at this facility and it allows youth to be able to
experience all types and find out what they may like. There is the added benefit of
building social cohesion within their cohort while doing it.

and mainly socialization. The program uses
recreational outings to help give ongoing

sectors have formed a collaborative
relationship (Lunn, 2020) as it receives
funding federally, provincially and at a
municipal level. It is recognized as critically
important for addressing the needs of
society, including the need for recreation
and leisure at all stages of life. (Lunn, 2020)

Recreation
Seniors benefit from continued recreation as it helps mentally, physically and socially.
The programs offered gives them reasons to get out and about, and socializing with
others in the community. Recreation will helps prevent age related injuries and mental
declines. Programs are also in place to help educate the seniors to attempt to keep
them current with the community (rules, taxes, norms etc.). The programs offered by
this society are to help engage the target age range in a variety of activities to make
their retirement more fulfilling and enjoyable (Lunn, 2020). The society is able to
invest in the senior’s futures; setting them up for a positive lifestyle, and continued
recreation participation through the help of public sector funding (government,
municipal and sponsor funding).

This non-profit organization focuses on
recreation, education, and leisure
programs and services that focus on
fostering social inclusion between
individuals with autism and their peers.
Their goal is to invest in the future of
their participant’s (most often their own
children) peer relations, social inclusion
and sustained participation in recreation
and leisure. The society is operated by
like-minded individuals who want to
engage and target specific cohorts to
make their mission of inclusion possible
(Lunn, 2020).

Coaching
This organization is able to coach parents, and non-neurodivergent children on the
complications of peer inclusion and spectrum disorders. Their main goal is to ensure
that children are educated so that there is an increase in social inclusion among peers
and those with autism. This goal allows them to invest in their children’s futures in
social, recreation and leisure environments. They rely and know their members, as
they are a tight knit community of like-minded individuals, for sustained operation
(Lunn, 2020). Through coaching they are able to promote knowledge of this specific
topic through the means of being a special interest group (Lunn, 2020).
