Body of Lesson
Opening
How will you begin
the lesson?
5 minutes
Introduce yoga and book
“What is our letter of the week?” (Y)
“Today we will be doing a special kind of exercise that begins with
Y. Any guesses?” (Guesses)
“We will be doing some yoga. What do we know about yoga?”
(Responses)
Today we will read My Daddy is a Prezel and we will do the different
poses in the book.
Before we read the book, we need to practice mindful breathing.
We are all going to sit criss-cross with straight backs. [Demonstrate]
Hold out your hands in a bowl shape. [Demonstrate]
I want you to pretend that your favorite food is in your hands. What
is your favorite food? [Allow every child to share] So you each have
your favorite food in your hands. It smells wonderful, but it is
extremely hot! We want to smell our favorite food [demonstrate
deep inhale] and then we want to blow on it to cool it off
[demonstrate exhale]. When we smell our food we are inhaling.
When we blow on it we are exhaling.
Let’s do it again! Inhale; exhale.
Close your eyes.
Let’s do it again. Inhale; exhale.
These are deep, mindful breathes that will help us relax as we do
our poses.

“Can you show me a yoga pose? [wait]”
“Can you show me another? [wait]”
“Doing yoga poses and taking mindful breaths can help us relax when we
don’t feel good. Next time you don’t feel good, you can try one of these
to help you feel better!”
How will you check for understanding/assess learning?
Students will be assessed through teacher observation. This observation will focus on the students’ abilities to
