RDA & agricultural data
A domain interest group to represent all stakeholders
producing, managing, aggregating, sharing, consuming data
from/for agricultural research & innovation
• will bring existing problems & experience on the table
• pave the way for a number of domain-specific WGs (e.g. germplasm
databases)
• serve as a well-supported and politically important domain case for
other WGs
• Positioned carefully to serve as an interface to existing fora become
their mechanism and interface for consultation with research data
infrastructures
• Will handle as first thing Wheat data interoperability in the context of
the Global Wheat initiative
I am coming from FAO. FAO is the agency of the United Nations to combat hunger and rural poverty. In this context having access to information is essential to improve agriculture and access to food
My team is working on standards, tools and methodologies to help our members to access and disseminate better relevant information
Within our mandate we cannot limit our data definition to numerical data. Traditionally we were looking at publications, then open Archives. Now we are extending our attention to data repositories, there are also associated data about persons, institutions and projects and derivatives like data repositories on learning materials or good practices. Always more importance is getting social platforms and science blogs tooData Definition by NSF ; “ Data: digital recorded factual material commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to validate research findings”
To enhance access and use of all data related to agricultural development and innovation, FAO, GFAR, the CGIAR and other partners have founded the CIARD (Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development – http://www.ciard.net) movement. One of the CIARD projects is the RING, a global registry of open web-based data in agriculture which is maintained by GFAR and FAO. The RING already provides access parameters tomore than 600 datasets with more than 5 million single data.
I want now to show you, what you can do with these datasets, using AGRIS (the International Information System about Agricultural Science and Technology) as an example
This is a traditional bibliographic record! We have more than 4 million of them. This shows the LOD version. We published them all as Linked Open Data. This gives other people the possibility to use them and we can link to others peoples data
We display the core. We are using AGROVOC descriptors to link to other resources: information about threatened species from data.worldbank.orgSpecies distribution maps from the Global Biodiversity Foundation Statistics about capture data and acquaculture DB Pedia to explain conceptsRelated Articles from Nature and through the Google API we also easily captured the full text of the document from the Web
So, through the use of open data and linked open data technology, we transformed a bibliographical record into a rich content page based on many distributed open data repositories
Within the agINFRA project, which is funded by the 7th framework program of the European Union, we try to create elements for an infrastructure that makes it easy to publish, use and consume open data in agriculture. We gratefully acknowledge that a lot of our Linked Open Data work is funded through the agINFRA project. Miguel Sicilia in his contribution on this conference will give more details
A further important step to linked open data in Agriculture is the Research Data Alliance . Within the Research Data Alliance we want to bring this forward now. We have founded a domain interest group to represent all stakeholders, We will bring existing problems and experiences on the table. We will conduct working groups for specific problems……….and we are asking for a broad partecipation
