Heiros Gamos of Anáriel – Background by Soror Diluvia Anáriel (the middle –á- is an “ahh” sound stretched into two-syllables) is a curious being, occupying a liminal existence between different categories of nonhuman person – angelic-god, neighborly-fae, and demonic-adversary – and having a story which begins within immanent time, yet eventually transcends it. They are a gregariously playful, sometimes-tricksy being, with many apparent forms and manners of interacting with humans who engage with them. From the experiences of several people this author is aware of, they have appeared most commonly as a usually-nude, hermaphroditic satyr-like being, but deer-like instead of goat-like. They often have great antlers and furred deer-footed legs to mid-thigh, as well as iridescent wings. Alternatively they have appeared as a winged-serpent, also crowned with antlers and shimmering with iridescent scales or wings. Either form may be accompanied by symbolism relating to deer, serpents, eggs, green-gold light (like light shining through a forest canopy), and intense sexual imagery. Anáriel is also known to change their presentation depending on context and whim, especially (if heard) their voice, and may present as human, cryptid, divine, profane, masculine, feminine, and varying degrees of both and neither. They enjoy speaking with various accents, and sometimes highly unusual or lyrical grammar or inflection. Their playfulness may seem confusing at first, especially as it often presents through bizarre synchronicities, but is intentionally used to help their petitioners break through mental blockades, and to find new or unusual ways of engaging with reality. As such, this tripartite symbolic “wedding” ritual is designed to assist practitioners in finding new paths and spiritual allies via generative, ambassadorial synchronicities; experiences designed to disrupt entrenched modes of thinking, and allow exploration of new and exciting possibilities and connections in the practitioner’s life. DISCLAIMER: this ceremony is not without risk – if you do not want your life to change or be disrupted then do not perform this ritual. Even if you do, don’t expect that bringing the playfulness of the wild into your life will always be comfortable! If and when it works as intended it should provide healthy disruption and bring change to stagnant situations, but this change may not always appear "positive” at first, especially if you have unhealthy attachments you aren’t fully aware of. If you pursue it, be prepared to be pushed beyond your comfort-zones. Seeking advice in advance from trusted allies (including advice from spirits and ancestors or divination) to find out if performing this ritual is a good idea is highly recommended, regardless of experience level. Additional Note: this ceremony was written with Anáriel’s consultation, and hybridizes symbolic elements from several traditions, including alchemy, thelema, christianity, polytheistic paganism, animism, and several others. It also contains coded language intended to act meta-symbolically to unlock the human mind and spirit in various ways. To that end the website NAEQ.io was used extensively, and the human author would like to thank one of its creators, Wren Collier, as well as Ebra O’Bedlam, and other users of the private “Fourth Order” chat-server for their support in this project.
  2. 2. Preparatory Material This ritual ceremony is a playfully transgressive, yet serious opportunity for social engagement beyond the bounds of “normalcy”, whatever that means for you. This means that preparation will entail a temporary disruption of your ordinary routines. If you have a normal fasting or exercising or partying or socializing schedule, or really any kind of “standard” way of doing things, find a way to temporarily upend them. If you typically engage in ceremony with psychoactive substances, either try a new substance or try fasting from one. Regardless, try to perform this ceremony (at least for the first time) in some setting or context in which you have never performed a similar act, or do something dramatic to set this experience apart from other ceremonial experiences you may have had. The key here is disruption; you are asking for disruption so start your plan on a foundation of disrupting your routine as a way of making this event sacred and transgressive. Remember that “safe” is relative, and please don’t risk your life, but most people have fairly established routines, whether magical or non-magical, and shifting those in some significant way should go a long way in making this work. If you are unwilling to try something uncomfortably new, again, don’t do this ritual! Apart from that it’s not a bad idea to set the scene in some useful ways - campfire in the woods, candle in a dark library, in some area forbidden to the public, on a mountain under the stars, by a public hiking-trail under forest-canopy in broad daylight, in the middle of the mall, etc. Get in an altered state if that will help you step out of your comfort-zone. Anáriel has a deep appreciation for decadent indulgence, especially psychoactive substances and dancing, but will be just as likely to arrive if you are altered from fasting, exercise, intense breath-work, etc. Finally, it may be extremely helpful to prepare a request for a particular part of your life you would like disrupted. Offerings associated with that part of your life will be welcome and should be offered while speaking the request aloud, and burned in a fire, buried, thrown into the woods, offered to a stranger, etc. Be careful with how you word the request, as Anáriel is a trickster, and may use the nature of your words themselves to produce the change necessary to find the path you need to take. The ceremony should be closed in a fully spontaneous manner, and not any particular way, but it’s a good idea to have some form of “goodbye” however informal, simply for formality’s sake (contradiction intended here). Following the ceremony, pay attention to things coming together in threes and pointing you in a direction that is challenging or intriguing in some way you hadn’t previously considered. Sometimes the synchronicities may become quite intense but eventually they will settle into some new sense of stability as you pursue the new path they lead to, but the ritual may be performed again to reinfuse any routine that has become mundane with renewed weird or absurd intensity. And after all else: Live Delightfully and Do What Thou Will!
