An access control system determines who is allowed to enter or exit, where they are allowed to
exit or enter, and when they are allowed to enter or exit. Historically this was partially accom-
plished through keys and locks. When a door is locked only someone with a key can enter through
the door depending on how the lock is configured. Mechanical locks and keys do not allow re-
striction of the key holder to specific times or dates. Mechanical locks and keys do not provide
records of the key used on any specific door and the keys can be easily copied or transferred to an
unauthorized person. When a mechanical key is lost or the key holder is no longer authorized to
use the protected area, the locks must be re-keyed.
Electronic access control uses computers to solve the limitations of mechanical locks and keys. A
wide range of credentials can be used to replace mechanical keys. The electronic access control
system grants access based on the credential presented. When access is granted, the door is un-
locked for a predetermined time and the transaction is recorded. When access is refused, the door
remains locked and the attempted access is recorded. The system will also monitor the door and
alarm if the door is forced open or held open too long after being unlocked.
Electric gates are an easy way to ensure the security of private premises and can be used for all
sized properties. Electric gates, though not very commonplace at the moment, have found their
niche in the market today. For those who find the security of their premises (be it residential or
commercial) important, electric gates are the way to go. There is a decrease in the cost of electric
gate kits and their installation. Aside from the basic kits, there are now many features that can

This is the first defense system in any security setup. By use of high tension wires embedded
on specially made posts and superimposing Ripper razor wire, this system deters would be in-
truders in two fold. While the ripper razor offers physical deterrence, the electric fence offers line
monitoring and high shock pulsating voltages.
Electric fences are designed to create an electrical circuit when touched by a person or animal. A
component called a power energizer converts power into a brief high voltage pulse. One terminal
of the power energizer releases an electrical pulse along a connected bare wire about once per
second. Another terminal is connected to a metal rod implanted in the earth, called a ground or
earth rod. A person or animal touching both the wire and the earth during a pulse will complete an
electrical circuit and will conduct the pulse, causing an uncomfortable electric shock. The effects
of the shock depend upon the voltage, the energy of the pulse, the degree of contact between the
recipient and the fence and ground and the route of the current through the body; it can range
from barely noticeable to uncomfortable, painful or for some fences even lethal

vi. Structured Cabling
All sorts of electronic equipment uses structured cabling. If you are building new construction,
it’s best to install all your structured wiring before the drywall goes up as it is much cheaper
than retrofitting it at a later date. There are all sorts of electronic systems that need to use struc-
tured cabling in the home or office. These include telephones, fax machines, DVD players, home
theater systems, surround sound, security system, lighting, internet access, computers, shared
printers, emailing, sharing of office files etc… any many more. If you have a wiring system in place

There are many reasons to get structured cabling installed. For starters you can use the same
cabling for all your electronic systems. There is no reason you have to figure out how to install
phone cabling, ethernet cabling or ISDN cabling. Having structured cabling installed eliminates
the need for having to spend hours trying (and sometimes failing) installing a complicated phone
system yourself. Plus, once you get the wiring and your system up and running, the last thing you
want to do is start all over again of you ever need to change it, add a line or two, or if you buy a
whole new system. Structured cabling makes life easier. The same goes for situations when you
need to add or remove a computer, add a modem, new fancy TV, or link up one printer to more than
one PC.
